Today I hit the trifecta of blogging! I now have internet, all my computer parts together in the same room and a little desk in the corner to sit and bang out a post or two every couple of days...
Our plan for creating the homestead life we said we wanted when we moved to Montana has in fact taken a turn or three in the last five years, but speaking for myself, I feel I am right where I need to be. It is hot, there are biting creatures pretty much everywhere, and yet, I have not felt this much peace in over 20 years. I know I am a bit long in the tooth to start over, but one must do one of three things, "give in", "give up", or "give it all you've got!" And that is my plan...
We are a bit short on housing, with only one home on our almost six acres, but as my son-in-law said the other day, "we all get along pretty good and we can make this (one house to share) work, until we can get another home on the property. I have to admit we are not shy on household goods, and with only one small kitchen to share, we have only the needed items and nothing more. However I did make sure that I have my grain mill, along with both Instant Pots and a slow cooker so we can make sure to get our meals cooked while keeping the house as cool as possible.
The property has a lot of clean up needed, and for the most part we have only explored the first acre or two, due to the brush that must be cleaned up so a path can be made for safe travel as we look around. There is no leash laws in our little area, and the dogs from the next property over pretty much had our property to themselves while it was for sale with no one living here. They are slowly learning that this land now has folks who have taken over their play area!
We have the bird feeders up and today a Red Cardinal stopped by to eat. In the distance we hear the crow of a rooster or two and the neigh of horses. And always the buzz of the Cicadas. From time to time we get a gentle breeze and my favorite wind chime will offer a melody. But other wise it it just the sound of family and the conversation of what is next on the list...
Besides a second home, we also need a tractor. One with a mower deck and a brush hog. Like I said we have a lot of land to clear! From there we need garden beds, a chicken house and perennials such as blueberries, and a fruit tree or two. Homesteading is not for the faint of heart...but mostly I wanted to be able to drop a line to say hello and let you know that I will be getting back to what I love, cooking for family and sharing the results with all of you.

DeleteWhen I was young I wanted to move to Montana and I was always sorry that I didn't.
ReplyDeleteMontana is stunning, we were there for 3 years. Grandson was born there. But in our backyard the TV show Yellowstone was filmed, that changed our little town. It was no longer little and it was no longer quiet.
