Easy Peach Compote

Peaches are one of my all time favorite fruits to eat and cook with. I have never met a peach prepared in any manor that was not simply delicious. Which brings us to this recipe for Easy Peach Compote, you are going to want to make this soon! It ticks all the boxes, easy, delicious and made with peaches!

Looking back I remember the days I would drive to the lower Yakima Valley and purchase two or three lugs of ripe, fragrant peaches.

I would bring them home and place them where they would mellow for a few days, and then the canning would start. Year after year, I went to the same orchard and purchased the same peaches. Hale freestone peaches to be exact. They grew big, and had a wonderful flavor. Plus one or two would be ready before the others, always insuring a fresh peach could be enjoyed before they were put into jars and sent to the pantry.

I loved how the red flesh around the pit, would turn the syrup in the jar, a light pink color.

When they were lined up on my pantry shelves, it was quite a sight to enjoy. At the time we had a well, and the pump house had been turned into an insulated storage building for canned goods, and potatoes. Plus all that insulation guaranteed, the pump would not freeze up in winter...which is always a good thing!

It has been many years since then, but my love of peaches has not waivered.

Until I can begin canning my own peaches once again, I do purchase organic, juice packed peaches. Not cheap, but then good food never is. And if I remember correctly, at the time, the peaches I drove to purchase and then can for my family, were more expensive than what I could find at the store. Peaches do grow here in Texas, so maybe, just maybe, I will be canning peaches once again.

Why should you make this Easy Peach Compote?

For a couple of reasons, first it is so easy, just like the name implies. And second, it is delicious!  And because it is lovely to top a piece of pound cake, or serve beside a spoonful of baked custard. It is not too sweet, making it perfect to spoon over cooked oatmeal. Or drop a spoonful into the center of muffin batter before you put them into bake. How about over cheesecake? And then there is the combination of ice cream and a spoonful of Easy Peach Compote, becoming your new quick and easy dessert. Something tells me, you won't have any trouble enjoying this at your house!

Some additional thoughts about this recipe:

When using juice pack peaches, this recipe has no refined sugar.

You don't actually cook the peaches, you simply poach them in the flavorful syrup.

The maple and cinnamon flavors are perfect together!

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • juice pack sliced canned peaches
Or
  • home canned light syrup peaches
  • maple syrup
  • cinnamon
  • salt
You will also need the following:
  • mesh strainer
  • medium size mixing bowl
  • medium size saucepan
  • whisk
  • measuring spoons
  • storage container with lid
Now we are ready to begin!

Easy Peach Compote
by the seat of my pants!

2 16 oz. cans of juice pack sliced peaches
OR
1 qt. home canned light syrup peaches
1/4 c maple syrup
1/2 t ground cinnamon
pinch of salt

Using the strainer over a medium sized mixing bowl, open and drain the peaches. While the peaches are draining, add the maple syrup, cinnamon and salt to the saucepan. Then add the juice from the peaches.

Over high heat, bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium and let the syrup boil to reduce the volume. Whisk as needed to break up any clumps of cinnamon that may be present. Continue to boil and reduce the syrup for 7 - 8 minutes.

Cut the drained peaches into bite sized pieces. when the syrup is reduced, add the peaches.

After adding the peaches, let the contents return to a boil. Gently stir the peaches and let the mixture cook over medium heat, for 2 -3 minutes, Stir gently once or twice. Remove from the heat an let stand at room temperature, until cool. Transfer into a storage container and refrigerate until serving as suggested.

  3. Hi Melynda, would you believe I've never really cooked fruit apart from poaching pears in red wine once. Being half way through winter your Peach recipes would be a delicious dessert with warm custard and then in Summer with ice cream. Thanks for the recipes and sharing at #WeekendTrafficJamReboot.
