Today I have joined Sherry for In My Kitchen, I have share in the past, but it has been awhile. And each month as I read the new posts being shared, I always tell myself to get a post together and join in the fun! And today, I am joining in the fun!
We have been quite busy here in East Texas, what with a thunder storm just about every other day. A few days ago we lost power in the middle of that storm and bless their hearts, it took our power company 12 hours to get the repairs made. But I should say, I feel lucky that is was for 12 hours, I know it is much worse in many other parts of not only our state, but others as well.
It seemed to me, that I did not get much done,
as far as new recipes tried and/or shared. But a quick look back proved me wrong! There were, eight new recipes/posts. And seven updated favorites reposted! Which is not too bad at all...I think about half my time in the kitchen is preparing staples and pantry ingredients, such as mayonnaise, salad dressings, granola. Along with laundry and dish soap. One of my goals that I set for my kitchen was to make more of our staples that we had through the years simply put into our grocery cart at the market.
And this year we finally have a garden!
That has been a big part of less time in the kitchen, but last night I picked green beans and cucumbers for our dinner. I have to say, that is nice! There are a few ripe blueberries to pick each day for the tops of oatmeal or cottage cheese. I am learning as I go, so I don't expect enough to process for the freezer or can, but by next year, I expect that to change.
I took the time to do more organizing, which is paramount to comfort when you live in a 40 foot RV!
Our bedroom suite had tons of storage space, so I made sure to use it to maximum potential. And I also reorganized in the kitchen. Since I wash dishes two or sometimes three times a day, I wanted the dish washing equipment to be what I need. And sometimes depending upon how much prep work must be done that day, they really get stacked high!
And we finally have the utility kitchen completed.
Unfortunately the stove I thought would work, will not, and we have our eye on a used propane stove. It will be delivered in about two months and at that point I hope to return to baking our bread! I have been without an oven for a year now, because quite simply there were so many other things to do, not having an oven was not a priority. But I do miss baking bread and other goodies.
And now I am off to read the other entries posted at In My Kitchen!

cooking everything from scratch in a tiny space does sound challenging!
ReplyDeleteMae, it is, but I picked up some good organizational skills while spending a year as a volunteer with NPS. This trailer we now have as a tiny home, is so spacious in comparison! Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteI am absolutely amazed and intrigued by how much cooking your do in a trailer. Glad you got your power back!
ReplyDeleteJudee, it is challenging but like you I eat for my health and eat what my body needs. The trade off is pretty good food and good health as well. Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteSounds like interesting times in your kitchen and garden. Fresh produce from the garden is so satisfying but dishes is something I could do without. Sometimes I feel like I am playing dishes tetris as I pile dishes high. Making staples must be satisfying also - I have been making my own granola over the last year or so and really loving it.
ReplyDeleteJohanna, I have come an expert in "high stakes" dish stacking! Thanks so much for stopping by, I appreciate it!
DeleteWow! You are so resourceful and inspiring, Melynda!
ReplyDeleteLaura, thank you so much!
DeleteThank for joining in this month Melynda. Yes it must be challenging and interesting to get around in a small(er) space than normal. I like to keep the dishes under control too :) I would find it hard without an oven tho. I seem to use it every day! Have a fab June. cheers SHerry
ReplyDeleteSherry, thank you for hosting, I really enjoy reading all the kitchen stories!
DeleteHats off to you for making so much with such limited space and yay for your green fingers. I would love to grow my own produce. Hope the weather is kinder to you in June :)
ReplyDeleteSammie, thank you. I am looking forward to the weather settling down as well, thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteThat anonymous was moi! sherry
ReplyDeleteThank Sherry!
DeleteI am so interested that you live in Texas, and so frugally, and yet you produce such delicious food. The seasons definitely determine my output as well, and now that it is cooler I am loving it. Look forward to hearing about your breadmaking. I love my sourdough baking.
ReplyDeleteHRK, so far I have not been successful with Sourdough, I don't know why. Maybe I am making it hard than it needs to be...thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteBeing organized is key to a good kitchen, and even more so when it is small. Not sure I would cope with washing dishes more than once a day though :)
ReplyDeleteTandy, I have to admit, I don't usually say to myself, "Oh boy I get to do dishes again!" Probably why I am considering a countertop dish washer in what was the laundry closet...thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteI meant to say how fabulous that you make your own soap!!! I have just gone back to using soap blocks rather than liquid soap! I love it.
ReplyDeleteSherry my goal has always been to be as self sufficient as possible. Plus I like knowing what I am eating and using to clean my house. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteI loved the tour through your home and I'm extremely impressed by your organisation! We live in a tiny apartment in Paris and have a kitchen which looks to be about the same size as yours. I spend a lot of time wishing we had a bigger kitchen since I feel like it's the heart of the home too, but reading your post it made me think of how many things we can make and how much life we can live even in a small space. Thanks for the contemplation! and have a great month
ReplyDeleteHello Dreams of Sourdough! Thank you for your lovely comment, I really appreciate it. To be honest, I don't think there is a kitchen that is too big for me! I have cooked commercially and professionally, and kitchens are one of my favorite rooms in the house.
DeleteYou were more productive than you thought in May. LOL. You sure did get a lot accomplished. YAY!!
ReplyDeleteThanks' so much for sharing with Sweet Tea & Friend's this month my friend.
Paula it is a hang over from my working years, I think I must be busy 24/7 and when I am not, I don't think I get much done....trying to change that up a bit in retirement, LOL. Thanks for stopping by, I sure appreciate it.
