Hello and Welcome!
Yesterday I got the Welcoming Quilt mended. You may be wondering what exactly is a Welcoming Quilt? Well let's see, this one is 67 years old. It is stained, it is was torn, well used, and it is butter soft!
I came home in this quilt (new at the time, it was made in late 1954 for my early 1955 arrival.) Years later I brought my children home in this same quilt. And when the grandchildren started coming, it has brought them home as well.
Come late May it will bring home our new grandson. I knew it needed mending, but I put it off as long as possible because I wasn't certain how to mend such a delicate item. But with the help of an old cotton hankie, sewing thread, and a thimble, the task was completed.
It is easy to refer to this quilt as a blanket because it is made from a single piece of fabric, rather than pieces of fabric quilted together. But the layers of the quilt are kept smooth and together with knotted yarn ties, just like the way my grandmother showed me as a young girl.
And a little sewing thread embroidery to make this new patch part of the quilt. I can't wait to meet this little guy!
