I had put myself on notice, it was time to make more of the condiments that we routinely purchase at the market. And I decided to start with Sweet Chili Sauce, because, well it is my hubby's favorite!
A bottle of Sweet Chili Sauce went into the cart each shopping trip, so it seemed the perfect choice to start with. My husband has a definite sweet tooth. And that tends to rule the condiments, beverages, and desserts he prefers. The desserts are fairly easy, if it has chocolate and sugar as part of the ingredients, it will be a hit! Condiments are a touch different, however. Too sweet and it could ruin the overall flavor of his meal. But after a bit of trial and error, we came together in this final recipe. It's not too sweet, and it is not too hot!
But that doesn't mean you can't add more chili flakes, if desired!
The thing I like about this recipe is that it does not call for anything I don't already have in my pantry. And while it is a bit different in appearance, that is only because all the ingredients are whole food ingredients, with no artificial flavors and more importantly. There are no artificial colors...
Will it separate in the fridge? Possibly, but just give it a good shake before you pour it on your food or into a small bowl for dipping, into. Is paprika in the store brand? Nope. But that touch of paprika adds a nice color and very little flavor.
So tell me, is this a copycat recipe?
Nope, not that I am aware of. However I was inspired from the countless recipes on the internet. While I also customized it for my hubby's preferred taste. My goal of course is to make it close (very close!) to his favorite brand we now purchase at the store. Because why make something your family won't eat? My goal was that this recipe for Sweet Chili Sauce would turn out and be like the brand we now purchase. And the flavor profile pretty much stands in the middle of the road, for heat, sweet, and sour. I can't wait to try our favorite Three Ingredient Pineapple Thai Chicken using our homemade Sweet Chili Sauce. But remember it is all about cooking for your family also. And with that I have offered some additional ideas below!
Some additional thoughts on this recipe:
If you find this is a good base flavor for your family, but want...
More heat, up the crushed chili peppers to 1 Tablespoon.
Less color, eliminate or reduce the paprika.
Thicker, up the cornstarch by 1 teaspoon.
More sour, add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the measuring cup, then fill the remainder with the rice vinegar.
A spicy after taste, add 1 t finely grated ginger. I have not added ginger to this recipe, but just might next time...
When cooking for your family, make it the way they would like it to taste!
Ingredients needed for this recipe:
- crushed red chili flakes
- paprika
- sugar
- rice vinegar
- garlic salt
- sherry wine
- cornstarch
You will also need the following:
- small saucepan
- whisk
- silicone spatula
- measuring cups
- measuring spoons
- storage container with a pouring spout
Now we are ready to begin!
Sweet Chili Sauce
2 T water
1 T and 1 t cornstarch
1 c water
1 t sherry wine
2/3 c sugar
2 t garlic salt, we like this homemade recipe
1/2 t paprika
Measure the 2 T water into a small bowl or measuring cup, stir in the cornstarch. Set aside.
Place the 1 c water into the saucepan along with all the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil over medium high heat, stirring constantly with a whisk.
When boiling, stir the cornstarch slurry and add it to the boiling mixture. Whisk until the mixture returns to a boil, and the mixture cooks to a mostly clear liquid.
Remove from the heat, cover with a lid and let rest 30 minutes. Decant into the storage jar, and refrigerate.
Storage options for Sweet Chili Sauce. This should keep in the refrigerator for up to three months. Due to the acid content from the rice vinegar. Shake well before using. I do not recommend freezing this recipe for longer storage.
