In My Homestead Kitchen November, looking back on October 2026.

Getting back into the groove after our vacation, took a bit longer than I thought it might! But we lunged back in on medium speed and after getting a few things replaced or updated, and life is now returning to normal. I am once again full of new inspiration and some of it is beginning to see the light of a blog post! Thanks for stopping by as we join Sherry for In My Kitchen!

I didn't talk too much about it, but our water heater went out.

It was the original one that came with the RV, and we were having a devil of a time finding a replacement for it. All in all we were without hot water for about a month, the only saving grace, is that we had a vacation along the way! Then we made the decision to replace it with an on demand water heater, since they are now available for RV's. They work a bit differently than the standard water heater that is always cycling to keep a big tank full of hot water. Our electric bill has gone down! With this propane unit, hot water is a few seconds behind the open tap, but still very fast! We already had one out in the shop where the washer and dry are. So I was familiar with them and felt confident it would work out just fine for dishes and showers. It took awhile to get it ordered, delivered and then installed. But let me tell you hot water for dishes and showers is a true blessing! I guess you could say I bought a new water heater for the kitchen this month.

Yes, I had a pair stashed everywhere!

And I (finally) came to the decision that my off the shelf readers would not do, any more.

It was high time for an eye exam and most likely prescription lens. Most evenings my eyes would itch and burn, leaving me unable to see well much less enjoy my knitting or crochet projects. After the exam I dropped off the RX and ordered the glasses. When I picked them up a week later I went from off the shelf readers to a trifocal progressive lens. Whoa, I had a learning curve ahead of me! The first week was all about learning how to hold my head so I would be looking out of the part of the lens I needed to use. Fortunately, now, it is becoming automatic. Which is nice, also my eyes are thankful for the fatigue relief! Also quite honestly using the computer is a lot easier as well...

Some of the sweet potatoes are ready for harvest.

Plus the pineapples were transplanted into larger pots. We will build a greenhouse around the pineapples. A few of this group of eight will be three years old next spring and we are hoping they will fruit! The first group of sweet potatoes that are ready for harvest are the standard orange flesh variety. And we plan on enjoying some of them for our Thanksgiving dinner! There will be tan flesh and purple flesh Japanese sweet potatoes to harvest later on. Our basil and thyme are still going strong and I hope they can be wintered over this year. The roses are doing very well. We did lose two in the process of transplanting them to a bed. They will be replaced this spring when root stock roses hit the marketplace. But the other bushes are beginning to bloom! Other than these items, the garden is in a rest stage, except for the weeds...

And I have stated a second blog.

During our travels as National Park Service Volunteers we were previledge to be able to visit so many wonderful places. At the time I took photos and shared these visits on Facebook to friends and family. Once we were home from our vacation I realized that it would be fun to not only share our travels in Texas, but also the great places we have already visited. The goal of the new blog is to bring these places to the attention of anyone who also loves the little out of the way place, the place that is a bit different or our true favorite, those places that will help you become a tourist in your own hometown. If you have the time, please take a moment to stop by Blue Collar Travel Adventures, for young and old! And take a look around...

And this is what happened in my October kitchen!

A kitchen as well as the cook will go through many phases as the years go by. Usually starting out cooking for only two folks, then increasing when children come along. Until one day the kids are grown and gone and you find yourself once again cooking for two. One thing I like to do is create new recipes that are small batch but are easy to double or triple as needed for a large family. But I also have some firmly held ideas for saving time and money in the kitchen as well. October found me writing about saving time and money! Also I had tasked myself with developing recipes for all the condiments my hubby enjoys from the market. I started with Sweet Chili Sauce...it is one condiment that went into the cart each time we marketed

And that about wraps things up, except to say, I do miss my the chickens! They started my day, when I opened the coop. And ended my day when I did a head count and cooped them back up again, as safe as was possible. I enjoyed the gossipy clucking when I went out to give them scraps. And let's not forget the rooster, he would have a crow off with the rooster up the hill at the next property! I do look forward to having them once again!
