Homemade Chocolate Syrup, don't forget to put a jar of this in your fridge, perfect for chocolate milk, cold mochas and a quick drizzle over just about anything where chocolate would be invited!
You will not find an easier homemade pantry helper to have on hand!
Homemade Chocolate Syrup is stored in the refrigerator until needed for a quick drizzle over the whipped cream covering chocolate pudding, or stirred into a glass of milk. or even dropped into a cold mocha....I think you get the picture. My husband is the chocolate lover in this house, and while I always keep a jar of Chocolate Sugar on hand for his hot morning mochas, this Homemade Chocolate Syrup is great for everything else, chocolate related!
Homemade Chocolate Syrup
adapted from: one good thing
makes approximately 1 1/2 cups
1 1/2 c sugar
3/4 c cocoa
dash salt
1 c water
1-2 t honey
2 t vanilla
In a medium size sauce pan combine the dry ingredients, stir well to mix.
Add the water and honey, stir again to combine.
Bring the mixture to a boil,
Once boiling, lower heat, and let simmer for 1 minute.
Stir in vanilla, let cool and decant into a storage container.
Plus like all our recipes, there are no unnecessary ingredients.
Just basic whole food ingredients! And while this does call for refined sugar, the serving size of 1 to 2 tablespoons doesn't cause sugar overload. You will notice a small amount of honey is also a part of the recipe, and there is a purpose. Honey will help the sugar from reforming sugar crystals while the syrup is stored in your refrigerator. The measurement of the honey is approximate, use what falls into the pan! And like all chocolate recipes, don't forget the salt, it really brings out the chocolate flavor.
We have been making this for (literally!) decades.
You can use any container you prefer, but I usually use a narrow mouth canning jar. Plus when you store this in a glass jar, you can decant while still warm. Once in the refrigerator we simply pour out what we need or use a spoon to drizzle over the top of whipped cream or even ice cream. If you think you will go through this recipe quickly, it is easy to double, simple use a quart jar...

DeleteI'm not much of a chocolate fan. BUT! This sounds so good. What does the salt do?
ReplyDeleteThanks' so much for sharing this recipe with Sweet Tea & Friend's this month dear friend.
Paula, the salt brings out the depth of flavor in the cocoa powder, it's only a tiny amount, but makes a world of a difference flavor wise. Thanks so much for stopping by, I appreciate it.
