Snacks will either make or break your overall nutrition for the day. Wait, did I did use nutrition and snacks in the same sentence?...I did, because you can in fact snack and add good nutrition along the way. Most of these snacks we offer are crazy easy as well as delicious, today we are making popcorn...
It's not so much that I love to snack, but rather that,
I can and often do get hungry between meals. I think a lot of folks do. For me at this time in my life, I eat until I am comfortable and stop. The amount of food we eat daily is not set in stone. And if you look back you most likely ate more food during periods of growth. Such as when you were a growing child, then maturing into adulthood. Also while supporting a pregnancy. Than you do now, as a mature fully grown adult. I try to dish up the amount of food that will comply with my preferred end result, comfort.
While cleaning my plate was something I was taught as a child,
I no longer feel the need to overeat just to finish my peas! But dishing up a healthy serving of food is just smart. Food is expensive, so why waste it? Not overeating is easily supported with a serving size, that fits your needs. Oh and my other tip to prevent overeating? When we have dessert to enjoy, I do save room. Remember those scenes in the movies where folks are groaning with pure enjoyment from their big meal? Trust me, enjoyment has never been what I felt when I overate.
But if you have healthy snacks to fall back on,
who cares if you get hungry before the next meal? Hunger is a good tool, it helps you stay in check with what your body needs. And some days we do need more food. To say eating between meals is not a good thing, is simply too harsh of a rule. Some folks hold less and will be hungry before the next meal. Others may have not have had enough time to sit and eat a proper meal. Each day can and just might offer a new reason that a healthy snack it in fact a good idea.
Is there a checklist or set of rules for snacking?
In some ways yes! Snacks should be just as nutritious as the food on the table for your mealtime. For us, that means whole foods with low sugar or sweetened with natural sweeteners like honey or real maple syrup. And this hill that I will die on, snacks should have some fiber. As well as healthy fats. Maybe some protein? And snacks need to have a fair balance of nutrition and flavor. Because if they don't taste good, no one is going to eat them! Now let's get started with some popcorn...This is the perfect adult snack, crunchy popcorn, spritzed with Olive Oil and sprinkled with sea salt! And yes, you can make as much as you like, but this is what I make for me....
Ingredients needed for this recipe:
- organic popcorn
- olive oil
- sea salt
You will also need:
- air popcorn popper
- spritzer bottle for olive oil
- serving bowl
Now we are ready to begin!
Air Popped Popcorn with Olive Oil and Salt.
makes 1 serving
2 T popcorn kernels
olive oil
sea salt
Place the popcorn into the air popper. Arrange the serving bowl under the chute and turn on the popper.
When the popping has finished, spritz the surface of the popcorn with the olive oil from the spritzer and then sprinkle with salt. Enjoy!
Storage options for Air Popped Popcorn with Olive Oil and Sea Salt. This recipe will make a snack sized portion for one person. Feel free to double or triple is serving additional folks. But I do not recommend leftover popcorn, as it will draw moisture and become rubbery.
