Morning Oats with Blueberry Maple Compote & Toasted Hemp Hearts

If you are looking for a new breakfast recipe that is a step-up from the usual bowl of oatmeal served at your house, you have come to the right place! Morning Oats with Maple Blueberry Compote and Toasted Hemp Hearts is one you will want to make very soon!

This delicious breakfast inspired a granola recipe!

Oatmeal is one of those foods that is often scorned as boring, yet incredibly healthy and good for us all! Full of soluble fiber which is just as important for all of the little loves in your life as it is for you...and if you look close, there are literally thousands of ways to prepare, eat, and enjoy this amazing grain. Morning Oats with Blueberry Maple Compote & Toasted Hemp Hearts is not only delicious but contains just a smidgen of refined sugar...not a bad way to start your day.

Kick your morning oats up a notch.

Our morning oats were kicked up a notch with the combination of real maple and blueberries. The taste is fresh and flavorful, without being overly sweet. This is the breakfast we enjoyed with hemp hearts. Hemp hearts are a nutritional powerhouse. Making hemp hearts an ingredient you will want to cook with and serve to the family, again. But straight out of the package, I must admit, hemp hearts are a bit soft, and if I may be completely honest, a tiny bit gummy.

Toasting hemp hearts is easy, and they are delicious toasted.

But I can tell you right now, taking a moment to toast the hemp hearts is so worth the effort! They turn into tiny little crunchy bits of warm nutty flavor, perfect for the top of your oatmeal. While our version of Morning Oats with Blueberry Compote and Toasted Hemp Hearts is dairy-free, for those that enjoy dairy with their oats, offer milk or cream on the side.

But Morning Oats with Blueberry Compote and Toasted Hemp Hearts are delicious just as they are...and so easy to serve for breakfast. If you are crunched for time, toast the hemp hearts and make the blueberry compote the day before, each keeps very well until you cook oatmeal for breakfast.

Personally, I like to toast up a skillet of the hemp hearts and have them available to sprinkle over not just oatmeal! Toasted hemp hearts are great sprinkled over cottage cheese and fruit, a tossed salad, hot cooked (and buttered!) green beans, I think you get the idea...

2 c water
1/4 t salt
2 T brown sugar
1 t vanilla
1/4 t ground cinnamon

1 c oats
1-2 T oat bran, if desired, this added fiber is great, but not mandatory

1 c blueberries - frozen berries work great here!
2 T maple syrup

2 T hemp hearts, toasted

Bring the water, salt, brown sugar, vanilla, and the ground cinnamon to a boil.

Add the oats along with the oat bran, stir well, reduce heat to simmer, cover, and let cook until oats are done to your liking.

Note: oat brands vary, you may want to use the suggested cooking time on the package.

While the oats are cooking, combine the blueberries and the maple syrup in a small pan, just bring to a boil, set aside to cool.

Note: you may also complete this step in the microwave if desired.

Next, place the hemp hearts into a dry skillet, stir gently over medium heat until the hemp hearts are golden brown.

Transfer the toasted hemp hearts to a small bowl to prevent over-browning in the pan.

To serve place cooked oats in serving bowls, divide the blueberry compote over each bowl of oatmeal, top with the toasted hemp hearts.

Pass cream or milk at the table if desired.

  1. Hello! It sounds like I need to get myself some hemp hearts and try toasting them! I only have whole hemp seeds and I'm not sure that would work! I love the idea of blueberry and cinnamon - I've been making sweet potato porridge with nutmeg this week... time for a change! Thanks for sharing at Fiesta Friday. Have a great weekend.
