Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix, easy, delicious and so convenient!

With all due respect, we need to respect Ranch Dressing a little more! Why? Because Homemade Ranch Dressing is always good, and with your own supply of premade mix packets, you are ready for salad at a moment's notice...

When you are pinched for time, a homemade mix is great to have on hand!

I love homemade salad dressing, and we never buy bottled dressings anymore. And not because they are made commercially made. There are some wonderful companies out there that make delicious products. We prefer to make out own. The only drawback to always making your own oftentimes is time. You see time is the one "ingredient" we just can't buy.

Which has taught me to be prepared. Be flexible in my decisions about what is cooked for our meals and be realistic in my use of that elusive ingredient...time. How does one do this? For starters, a well-stocked pantry (yes, this is my call of the wild!), recipes that are tried and try, and a few homemade mixes. Like this Homemade Ranch Dressing Mix.  You will find a few different mix recipes here at Scratch Made Food! & DIY Homemade Household, and they are all made with pantry staples.

I like to make this one in a small production line for bulk storage.

This saves time over mixing each recipe separately when I make up another batch of homemade Ranch Salad Dressing. But honestly if you prefer to mix up just one batch at a time, go for it! I have used plastic sandwich bags and a freezer bag with directions for making up the mix, but these will be used again and again. To keep the closure tracts clean, simply turn the bag down, before pouring out the ingredients.

Also by having this made up and ready to go, it is easy to toss it into our little travel trailer if we are fortunate enough to be able to get away for the weekend. Just so you know, Homemade Ranch Salad Dressing goes great with a Lacinato Kale Salad

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • dried buttermilk
  • garlic granules
  • onion granules
  • salt
  • pepper
  • dried parsley
  • dried dill
  • sugar
You will also need:
  • measuring spoons
  • small container or plastic bags
Now we are ready to begin!

  1. Recently I have read several histories of the very American Ranch Salad Dressing. Quite interesting: it really started on a ranch called Hidden Valley Ranch. When I make garlic and onion flavored things from scratch, I prefer to use fresh garlic and onion: the dried varieties taste bitter to me. But your version is probably more like the one in the little packet, which is definitely a classic.

    1. Hmmm, I have (fortunately) never experienced a bitter flavor with any of the products I use. But I can certainly understand your hesitancy in making up a recipe calling for an ingredient you have had a bad experience with. Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.

  4. Where can I find dry buttermilk at?

    1. Patti, you can usually find it in the spice/baking aisle of most grocery stores. Once opened, I store mine in the freezer now, thanks to a great hint I received here recently. I did put my sealed cannister in a freezer bag, and right into the freezer.

  5. I LOVE THIS!!! We use a lot of ranch in my house. I am also a teacher and this would be a unique gift for my fellow staff members. Super easy and I could give it in a small mason jar decorated for Christmas. Thanks for sharing at #trafficjamweekend
