What's happening at our house?
We have been in a heat wave for the last few days. My hubby has had a very difficult time in the heat, but in truth, we all did. While I do better, boy did I learn a few things about the hot heat in East Texas.
My zucchini plants in one bed with full sun, actually cooked in the hot sun. They have since been removed from the garden.
The hens are not finding that many bugs and grubs to forage for, so they require move food at feeding time. We are also teaching them to coop up. We do have an extra Rooster to offer up, you can't have 2 bosses in a group this small.
Our feral/well loved/they now live in a safe environment cats are no where to be seen in the heat. They are expert nappers!
The rain we received came quick, (6 inches in about 5 hours) caused some flooding, and took out our above ground pool. Not in destroying the pool itself, but in turning the water in the pool. We do not seem to be able to shock it enough to clear the water and get rid of the algae. We live on flat ground so no issues, but many lost driveways in about 4 hours from the run off.
My plans for dinner seem great in the morning while desire and energy are high, but for some reason I am not that motivated after a a long day of heat. But I do follow through because I am hungry after a day of work, even in the high heat.
And I will celebrate the day I can enjoy ice cream once again!!!

Why did my husband and I put together a tiny house homestead here in East Texas?
Our Tiny Home!
Turns out, it is a bit of an interesting story, you can read about it here if you like...and now that we are settled in, we have also made a photo tour of our 5thwheel tiny home. You really must be organized to fit it all in, cooking, gardening, homesteading and also a bit of fun from time to time!
And from time to time when inspiration strikes, I write about it all. The good, the bad, and all the other stuff from years ago, if you have an interest in creative thoughts down on paper...you could take a gander here. And now From the Heart Vol II can be found here.
And...
I try each day to get out and take a moment for myself to observe and see the daily changes taking place on our property. These moments taken out wandering have helped me find small repairs needing done as well as a rose that might have just bloomed!
I decided to photograph these findings for enjoyment yes, but also to observe the land around me along with the changes (and hopefully improvements through the years.) You can find those photos at our Welcome to our Homestead page.

Sorry to hear about the floods and heat; that sounds awful. The black plastic surrounding your plant also makes the soil hotter too. I do think zucchini like a little reprieve from the hot sun though. We mulch with grass clippings or shredded leaves to suppress weeds.
ReplyDeleteHi Amy, I am learning some crops are not summer crops here in TX! I took another look at the photo and it does look like black plastic, but it is water permeable weed barrier. And this bed was in direct sun, with no shade what so ever. I had already had this bed planted when I made the decision to let the beds rest and work on structure in the garden for July and August. Sweet potatoes do well, so that will be my summer crop...
