Homemade Garlic Salt, but why? I have the answers...

How to make your own Garlic Salt, and why it is worth a few minutes of your time. Plus it stirs up in a snap!

I will just make the confession right now, we use (and enjoy!) garlic in most of the dishes that are cooked around here. From a simply sauté on the stove to a slow and low grill on the barbeque. Garlic is usually invited to the party! And I keep garlic in several forms available for use in the kitchen pantry. Mostly because of the ease of use. For example when grilling my husband used dried garlic either alone or in combination with other flavors in a sprinkle on seasoning. We have chopped frozen garlic in the freezer for a quick addition to any recipe here in the Tiny House. But I also enjoy the quick grab and go use of dried garlic as well. And often my favorite to grab, is Garlic Salt

And while store bought garlic salt is quite inexpensive, there is a reason I prefer to make my own. The salt. We use sea salt in and on our food for seasoning, and most prepared seasoning blends, even the organic ones, simply use a generic salt. But since I already have my Celtic Sea Salt in the cupboard, with a jar of organic dried garlic, homemade Garlic Salt is a breeze to stir together! Granted it is a small item this salt business. But this is also the reasoning behind making my own brown sugar, I get to control make sure we are eating the foods and ingredients that we prefer.

Most jars of garlic salt found in the market have parsley flakes added. And yep you sure could add a teaspoon. But by personal choice I do not keep dried parsley in my cupboard. As I have found it to be flavorless and only adding color. Along those same lines of thought, you could add a teaspoon of ground pepper. Maybe the parsley flakes were to help you know where you had sprinkled the garlic salt?

Living in a high humidity climate I have learned a couple of tricks to keep salt dry! Here in Texas salt draws moisture from the air. And while it won't hurt the salt in any way, a salt blend will turn to taffy in a jiffy. To solve this, we keep our salted spice blends in the freezer. The little cross-top freezer is perfect as a storage spot. They fit on one of the shelves on the door, and are easy to get to when cooking. If you find that the flavor of what is in the jar (usually garlic!) begins to take over the whole freezer, simply put the jar of spice in a plastic freezer bag to insulate it from the more delicate food stored there, like ice cream.

We are fortunate, we have a double refrigerator in our Tiny Home, so we have a savory side seasoning blends, chopped onions and minced garlic, and a sweet side for storing our dessert treasures, vegetables and fruit.

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • salt of choice
  • organic powdered garlic
  • dried organic parsley if desired
  • fine ground pepper, if desired
You will also need the following:
  • measuring spoons
  • small mixing bowl
  • kitchen spoon
  • storage container
Now we are ready to begin!
