We have many recipes here on the blog from other family members. They were (and continue to be) a part of our food journey as a family. Cooking for those you love is a gift, and how nice to look back on those gifts from time to time. Plus we still enjoy the recipes these cooks offered, just like this crazy good chocolate dessert from our very own Grandma Jean!
Jean was my children's spirited yet playful grandmother.
As my Mother-in-Law we were as different as night and day in the kitchen. Jean did not like to cook, and the quicker a meal could be put together, the better. But she also had a wonderful skill of being able to look at a recipe and just know it would be delicious! And she was a pro at finding a delicious, but still, simple to make recipe! This chocolate dessert is one of those. Grandma Jean's Baked Fudge Pudding was always looked forward to, year after year. And the upside of this recipe is how frugal it is. Only calling for basic ingredients from the pantry.
The truth is, there is a similar chocolate pudding cake recipe in most families!
And this one is not that different, except for one thing. This is the one served on the dining table when we all ate together. This is the one that built all the food memories, carried by everyone through the years. Recipes like this one are the building blocks of a lifetime of shared meals. And proof that it doesn't take a pile of money or hours of time to put a memory meal together. You simply cook and call it dinner. As delicious as this is, (and it is!) it was being around the table with each other, as much as it was the food.
Did I change Jean's recipe?
Yes, I did, this one is made with whole wheat flour. And I am pleased to say, absolutely nothing was lost in translation! It is still fudgy, rich, delicious, and so very easy to make. I opted for my Whole Wheat Self-Rising Flour which is still a lifesaver in the kitchen on busy days. And seriously aren't they all? Jean knew, she also had kids to feed, a house to keep and a job to work. And dinner still needed to be made, and on some nights dessert too. Because no matter how busy we are, family around the table is still the first goal of each day...
Some additional thoughts on this recipe:
Yes, you may add chocolate chips to the top when you sprinkle on the cocoa and brown sugar!
Or walnuts.
If possible use a deep sided pan, this needs to bubble up a bit to make the pudding part, while baking in the oven.
It really is delicious enough plain, but adding a scoop of ice cream turns this simple dessert into a celebration...
Put the water on to boil, when you preheat the oven...
Ingredients needed for this recipe:
- Whole Wheat Self-Rising Flour, recipe found here.
- sugar
- salt
- brown sugar, you can make your own!
- cocoa powder
- butter
- milk
You will also need the following:
- 9 inch baking pan, deep sides if possible
- measuring cups
- measuring spoons
- mixing bowl
- whisk
- silicone spatula
- small saucepan
Now we are ready to begin!
Grandma Jean's Baked Fudge Pudding
From: my Mother in Law's cookbook!
350-degree oven
2 T butter
1 c Whole Wheat Self-Rising Flour
pinch of salt
2 T cocoa powder
3/4 c sugar
3/4 c milk
1 t vanilla
1/4 c cocoa powder
3/4 c brown sugar
1 3/4 c boiling water
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, and melt the butter in a 9 inch baking pan. Round or square, the choice is yours. Remove from the oven as soon as the butter is melted, and carefully rotate the pan to cover the bottom with the butter.
Bring the 1 3/4 c water to a boil, set aside.
In a medium sized mixing bowl, combine the Whole Wheat Self-Rising Flour, salt and sugar. Whisk together to combine. Add the milk and whisk until smooth.
Carefully pour into the baking pan with the melted butter.
Sprinkle the cocoa powder and brown sugar over the batter in the baking pan. Carefully pour the boiled water over the top.
Bake at 350 degrees for 35-45 minutes or until done in your oven. Remove and let cool. Serve warm with whipped cream if desired or ice cream!
Storage options for Grandma Jean's Baked Fudge Pudding. Store covered at room temperature for up to three days, if you have leftovers (you won't!) store covered in the refrigerator.
