Welcome to the Book Review Linky Party, a sharing link-up for books! We are so happy that books are once again, back in fashion! And a great way to keep them front and center is to share a review of what you have read, if and how you enjoyed it and if you would recommend the book to a friend! Oh and a story or two of how you came to own the book would also be fun...
This Book Review Linky will start each Wednesday at 12AM MST
And will run Wednesday through Tuesday of the following week. It is hosted with a full link-up at Homemade On A Weeknight! After linking be sure to take a look at some of the other reviews. You just might find your next good read...plus it is fun to support other readers and bloggers. Reading, like travel is one area where you can and will spend money and yet, you are richer after doing so!
I am so happy to share and be a part of this weekly event!
Reading has always been something I have enjoyed. First as a child visiting the library each week (hello Little House books!), then as a parent and grandparent (Good Night Moon!) and always as a cook in my own kitchen. Cookbooks in particular have played a large part in recipe development and as a means to widen my own limited food horizons! While I might not get to Spain or Germany, through a recipe, I can cook the foods enjoyed there! Not to mention learning to knit, fix a leaking pipe, or even plant a garden, because books can be a large part of our own, journey of a lifetime.
What am I sharing this week?
The More-with-Less Cookbook by Doris Janzen Longacre.
I must confess this is a bit embarrassing!
I can not find this book to take photographs and include additional info, such as the graphs that show protein in common everyday foods. Along with many more helpful charts and gathered nutritional information. I am fairly certain I found this book in Washington state at least a decade ago. Possibly while we lived on the peninsula. At that time we volunteered for the Friends of the Library, in Ocean Park. And had access to many wonderful book sales! But one thing is important to remember, it has been a wonderful book to own, use and cook from! I have a sad feeling that this book and possibly others, got missed when we were taking an inventory of the damaged books, after our frozen pipe flood, back in Wyoming. I have written about that and you can read about it here.
But let's get back to the Book Review!
For the longest time I only bought hardback cookbooks. But it only took a few special reprinted cookbooks found in paperback to change my mind. I do believe hardback books stay open better, and are often larger in size. Larger also means heavier, which helped them stay open while being used. But a good cookbook is a good cookbook, and it didn't take me long to figure out how to keep the smaller, lighter paperback books open! And that is how I came to purchase More With Less...
This book like all my cookbooks has many pieces of paper marking various pages of a recipe that caught my eye. Many have been made, some have also been shared on the blog. Such as:
Green Bean Soup. This is so delicious. I tell everyone this soup tastes like summer. Even in the dead of winter using frozen green beans.
Bread Crumb Muffins. Bread crumbs do tend to stack up when you run a frugal kitchen, these muffins are a fun (and delicious!) way to use some.
Parsley Honey and Lemon Salad Dressing. This salad dressing originally caught my eye because it calls for parsley. A much underused ingredient in my opinion! But it is also delicious and the perfect dressing over pears and avocado slices for an instant salad!
Fortunately I found a photo of this book on thriftbooks.
It turns out it has been printed a number of times, and each printing has a different cover page. I also happened to notice that they have two in stock, and I have already ordered another one for myself. Sadly it wasn't until writing this review, that I realized this cookbook is no longer on my bookshelf. Ironically we have been so busy first with moving, and then getting settled that most of our meals for the past two years have been quite plain. However being a part of this Book Review Linky, has me reaching for my cookbooks once again. The loss of this book is easy to remedy. Keep your fingers crossed with me, that this is the last one...Thank you for stopping by, I appreciate it.
