What's in your crisper drawer? Let's talk cabbage...

Currently I have half of a head of cabbage in my crisper drawer. But it wasn't always that way, As a matter of fact it has been fairly recently that I have come to see and use cabbage for the versatile vegetable that it is! Come and take a look at how we enjoy preparing cabbage and maybe you too will find a few more ways to enjoy this easy to prepare vegetable!

As I have shared in the past,

we have a standard grocery list when we go to the market. I has the basics that we tend to buy each time we visit, and cabbage is on that list. One reason is that it is good raw in a salad as well as cooked and served aa s side dish vegetable. And I would be remiss to not mention that Cole Slaw has been a real favorite to put on the table!

Cabbage is easy to store.

Simply put the full or cut head in a plastic bag and place it in the fridge. Keep the cabbage dry and it will last a long time. If it does take on a slight brown or gray color on the cut edge, simply trim it off. It is oxidation and harmless. The same goes for any outside leaves that might have taken on a yellow hue. Cabbage will take on a bit of a peppery after taste, when it is getting old. But again it is harmless. When that happens I usually fry the cabbage in butter with some onions!

Freshly harvested cabbage is often the sweetest.

And my preference for Cole Slaw. But that is also true of a new head of cabbage that has yet to be cut, it is sweetest when you first cut it. And one reason the first dish I make with a new head of cabbage is often Cole Slaw. It turns out we have a fair number of recipes calling for cabbage here on Scratch Made Food! & DIY Homemade Household. And let's not forget that cabbage also comes in a stunning red variety!

Come and take a look...

Family Favorite Cole Slaw only calls for a quarter of a head of cabbage. Making it the perfect bowl of Cole Slaw for most families!

Red Cabbage Slaw calls for a small head of red cabbage. But trust me, those leftovers are so good! I love to add cheese or ham for a main dish salad for lunch.

Cabbage New Potato and Onion Skillet.  The perfect way to introduce cabbage to your family. This is a perfect trio of vegetables!

Stir Fried Red Cabbage with Chives. Unusual and so good! Plus it is quite beautiful when presented with chive flowers...

Rumbledethumps.  Potatoes and cabbage are a pairing in many countries. And I highly approve of this dish!

Simple Baked Cabbage.  As the name states. Baked until silky, this is delicious!

Granny Dorr's Easy Fruited Sauerkraut.  You cannot have a list of cabbage recipes and not have one featuring sauerkraut!

Chicken Bacon and Cabbage Skillet. A skillet meal is the way to go when time is tight and everyone is hungry now!

Sauerkraut and Kielbasa. Everything goes into the slow cooker and dinner is done when needed!

Stove Top Cabbage Rolls. I love cabbage rolls, and these simmer on the stove, leaving the oven for a cobbler...or a cake!

Chicken Legs and Sauerkraut, not the prettiest dish but it will be one of the tastiest!

Cabbage Salsa! One of the best things to ever happen to a bag of corn chips!
