How to Make Homemade Smoothie Packets!

Who knew that being so far away from a Costco would give the opportunity to make our own Homemade Smoothie Packets? Come and take a look, these are easy and if you have a berry patch, you have what you need!

One of the changes we have made living here in East Texas,

is that we no longer go to Costco like it was a grocery store just down the road! Which is exactly what we did, when we lived in Vancouver Washington. As a matter of fact, there were three Costco stores less than 10 miles away. One to the south, one to the East and one North of us! Our closest Costco here n Texas? One and one half hours away. Yep, going to Costco is now a five hour day, and that is only if you don't hit a traffic snare. Even though I am a long time dedicated Costco shopper, we have made a few changes, such as:
  • A master list of what we routinely purchase at Costco, along with how many we need to purchase, to stock up.
  • We only shop four times a year. January, April, July, and October. Avoiding December...
  • The sale ads, do not alter our shopping schedule. The sale prices does not equate to another visit.
  • Eliminated from our shopping list, what we can make ourselves. Which is pretty much what we do, as often as possible!
  • Oh, and we pack a lunch. That way we can eat as needed without the added pressure of finding someplace for lunch, and lengthening our day.

Which led to these homemade Smoothie Packets!

My husband is a smoothie drinker. And it really kicked into gear when we found smoothie packets at Costco. But, and there is always a but when you have made a major change in your usual activities. Since he enjoys a smoothie three or four times a week, under our new shopping schedule, I would need to buy several packages of premade packets to provide a smoothie for about 85 breakfasts. Turns out, I don't have freezer room to store that many smoothie packets! It was time to make our own...

The ingredients are of your choosing!

However, with that said, we pretty much copied the packets that he had come to enjoy! Strawberries, blueberries, banana slices, kale and for this round we also used some pitted cherries. When we do our major grocery shopping at the beginning of the month, I get the ingredients I need to make up 15 packets. That gives him the option of a smoothie every other day if desired. I have no doubt as time goes by, the fruit after the strawberries and blueberries may vary, but other than that smoothie making will continue.

Homemade Smoothie Packets
by the seat of my pants!

Since we had decided on kale for the green ingredient, the first thing I did was to purchase a very large bag of organic kale at my local market. Even thought it is labeled as triple washed, I washed it again, laid it out on cotton toweling and let it dry. When it was dry, I returned it to the bag and placed the bag in the freezer. Because it is dry it does not freeze together, making it the easiest choice for ongoing Smoothie Packet making. After making smoothie packets, the kale is returned to the freezer, until we make more Homemade Smoothie Packets

You will need the following ingredients and equipment:
  • strawberries
  • blueberries
  • ripe bananas, the perfect place for those RPE bananas in the fruit bowl...
  • kale or greens of choice
  • additional fruit of choice
  • zip top sandwich bags
  • large freezer storage bag

Into each sandwich bag place:

3 or 4 strawberries
2 T blueberries
4-5 thick-ish slices of banana
small handful of kale
any other fruit you are using

Up close view of the bags before adding the kale.

Remove the air from each bag, zip the top closed. I like to slip the bags into a large pan for freezing. They will freeze in a compact shape. Which helps keep everything tidy.

Frozen and ready to bag up and store in the freezer.

Package the smoothie packets into a labeled freezer storage bag. Any that do not fit, I put into the little freezer right here in the house. They won't be there long!
