Grilled Cheese Pizza Bombs!

Grilled Cheese Pizza Bombs, are the bomb! Fun to make, and delicious to eat. A fun meal to share at camp and everyone can dress their own, come and take a look...

A fun lunch or dinner the whole family can help with!

We have made these Grilled Cheese Pizza Bombs a couple of times now. Not only are they delicious, they are so easy to customize. Simply offer your favorite toppings or for a large group as many toppings as everyone will enjoy, and want to choose from. This might be the perfect dinner to share with friends and family. You will notice that there are a couple of roll shapes in the photos. I was so pleased to find whole wheat rolls at one of the stores we shopped at!

So far, we have been unable to find a large round loaf of bread to make a big bomb, but that did not stop us from enjoying these personal sized pizza bombs. The difference? None really except you can cut the large loaf into pie shaped pieces and it does look more like a piece of pizza. The fun part about making the small individual bombs is that for hungry appetites you can have two different flavors of pizza...

You can use your stove or an outdoor grill.

The first time we made these we used a skillet and cooked them right in our little kitchen. The second time we used the outdoor grill that came along with us on this trip. I found I did not have a preference for one cooking style over the other, and the skillet was a bit easier for just the two of us. We also learned a couple of tips along the way.

Such as:

Put some of the toppings in with the cheese layer, as the top of the small rolls does not allow for adding very much toppings.

Use a rich pizza sauce to crown your bomb! You want that flavor to shine through the layers. You may also offer additional sauce on the side.

And, cut them in half for eating, to avoid loosing all the toppings.

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • French rolls or a large round loaf
  • various pizza toppings as desired
  • pizza sauce
  • cheese of choice, we used Colby jack
  • mozzarella cheese
You will also need the following:
  • skillet or outdoor grill
  • kitchen bread knife
  • cutting board
  • foil or a lid that fits the skillet
Now we are ready to begin!

Grilled Cheese Pizza Bombs
inspired by a video my daughter told me about!

French rolls or a large round loaf
pizza toppings of choice, we used sausage, pepperoni, grilled vegetables, ham, pineapple and olives
pizza sauce, we like this one!
Colby Jack or other cheese of choice
grated Mozzarella
butter

If making your own pizza sauce, do that now!

Pan sauté any meats to remove excess fat, set aside.

Grill or sauté any vegetables that you will offer, and set aside.

After assembling the ingredients, you will need to cut the bread/rolls.

Cut a thin slice off the top of the roll, and the bottom of the roll. You will want to cut a large round loaf the same way.

Cut in half crosswise through the middle of the roll.

Lightly butter the top and the bottom, cut edges and place butter down in a skillet or grill top.

Cover the bread with thin slices of the Colby Jack or cheese of choice. Grill over medium to medium low heat to melt the cheese.

We had our toppings ready to go! When the cheese is melted you may add as many toppings to half of the toasted cheese rolls. Match up the two halves, sandwich style.

Top with pizza sauce, more toppings if desired and some shredded mozzarella.

Cover with a lid or piece of foil. and let the mozzarella melt, taking care to not over toast the bottom of the buns!

Before serving, cut in half if desired.

Storage options for Grilled Cheese Pizza Bombs. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to three days. I do not recommend that you freeze Grilled Cheese Pizza Bombs, due to a loss of texture.

  5. Interesting. I keep sourdough starter going and it makes a wonderful pizza, though trying not to use the oven so much with the hot weather here.
