Di of Di-alog puts together a basic piece (a simple basic dress for example) and then goes on to wear, photo and show how the different accessories change and impacts the overall finished look. She is also adorable in her joy of sharing fashion ideas with you! While I have never been a big consumer of fashion pieces (due to various reasons through the years, LOL) in my working life and everyday life since, even I was having a good time taking a look through the photos! What's happening at our house?
Let's just cut to the chase, shall we? LOL!
This has been a year of weeds, lovebug infestations and a bumper crop of cockroaches to deal with! I know that for most, cockroaches are an off putting topic, with the less said the better. But in all honesty they are everywhere and they are not a sign of a dirty environment. Even if you don't see them, they are around. They only come in for food, water and warmth in the cold and heat relief in the hot seasons. And we are having a hot season, this summer. With at least 4 to 6 more weeks in store. I have no doubt, I will encounter a couple more. We do employ a maintenance spray on a regular schedule around the outside of our home, (for ants and roaches) because they don't live where we live, WE live where they have lived for centuries...
That pile of pine needles does not look very large in this photo, but that is actually 2 wheelbarrow loads.
My garden beds are tired, thirsty and happy to grow more weeds. I have had some success with sweet potatoes this summer, and getting a handle on the weeds, and, on the chickens. The situation with the chickens was, too many roosters. It took awhile, but the best rooster showed his true spirit (firm but gentle guidance with the hens). Two roosters went to the freezer. Plus the small coop used for laying eggs, needed a good clean out. Yes those are "suggestion" eggs! I look forward to the day that two or more real eggs are in each space! I also got a spider bite one day in the garden, actually my first spider bite. I was pulling dewberry vines out of the garden beds and originally thought a thorn had made itself very comfortable in the back of my hand, but later that night I knew better. We are also moving all the roses that were in pots to a very large garden bed, to have a cutting garden. The roses were not doing well in pots and may not survive in the garden, but it is worth the work to give it a go. I look forward to cut flowers in our Tiny Home once again.
I am "harvesting" some of the long pine needles on our property to use as mulch in the paths between the garden beds for weed control. We are on the list for the local power company to bring wood chips when they return to our part of the county, for roadside maintenance. And trust me those wood chips make wonderful weed suppressing mulch. Plus the cost of only needing space for them to be dropped off, is affordable. But until then, something needs to be laid down, and pine needles are a good second choice. Plus around here, they are just as affordable as free wood chips! We have used leaves from our property, but leaves do not pack down allowing more weeds to grow than other mulching materials. Which for now, less weeds is my goal! We do hope to get another crop of green beans and pea pods planted in mid October. Except for the dead of winter, you can pretty much garden the full year, here in Texas.
I hope you had a great summer, with plans completed and smiles all around! And my final news, we have a spur of the moment cruise planned, and just in time I say! We have made arrangements for the animals, which is the hardest part when the whole family wants to get away. It really was time for a little break...
Why did my husband and I put together a tiny house homestead here in East Texas?

Turns out, it is a bit of an interesting story, you can read about it here if you like...and now that we are settled in, we have also made a photo tour of our 5thwheel tiny home. You really must be organized to fit it all in, cooking, gardening, homesteading and also a bit of fun from time to time!
And from time to time when inspiration strikes, I write about it all. The good, the bad, and all the other stuff from years ago, if you have an interest in creative thoughts down on paper...you could take a gander here. And now From the Heart Vol II can be found here.
And...
I try each day to get out and take a moment for myself to observe and see the daily changes taking place on our property. These moments taken out wandering have helped me find small repairs needing done as well as a rose that might have just bloomed!
I decided to photograph these findings for enjoyment yes, but also to observe the land around me along with the changes (and hopefully improvements through the years.) You can find those photos at our Welcome to our Homestead page.
