Apple Raisin Chutney, a fermented foods condiment

Are you looking for a delicious, easy-to-make fresh fruit chutney, that is also probiotic? Fortunately, Apple Raisin Chutney is exactly the recipe you are looking for...so why not come and take a look!


Busy, but not too busy to cook the foods we need.

Now that we are settled in Montana (well more settled, there is yard work that needs serious attention, and other things on the list!) I have been able to do a lot more cooking. One area or item I have wanted to expand upon is fermented foods. Because they are known for assisting with good gut health, my daily goal is one drink or serving of fermented foods daily.

This is a delightful way to get good gut bacteria and eat well in the process.

While I had remembered the homemade sauerkraut, pickles, and root beer from my childhood, I had no idea about the connection with gut health and fermented foods, until now. Fast forward 40 years (whew, that went fast!), and along the way, I too became gut health compromised. I did not understand the reason or reasons behind it until I started looking at the differences in my choice of food as an adult and the foods put on the table at my childhood family home.

The remedy? More delicious, homemade fermented foods to enjoy!


A standard canning jar, works great!

So today I am sharing a delicious Apple Raisin Chutney. I had this "pinned" on my Pinterest board, waiting to get to it, and once made it became a favorite. This recipe is intended to be stored in a fido style jar, which I did not have available, it turns out, they are all full!! However a standard jar is fine, simply remember to let any built-up gas escape from time to time, or leave the lid almost screwed down...

Perfect any way you serve it.

I enjoy this with a variety of foods from a sandwich at lunch to a slice of roast pork for dinner.  And it is so good! Lightly sweet, with a bit of a tang, and a mild crunch from the walnuts. I can usually tell by reading a recipe if it is going to be good, but it is always fun to enjoy food that surpasses your original interest in the recipe, and this Apple Raisin Chutney does just that.

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • apples
  • walnuts
  • raisins
  • whey strained from yogurt
  • honey
  • salt
  • cinnamon
You will also need the following:
  • kitchen knife
  • cutting board
  • measuring cup
  • stirring spoon
  • large mixing bowl
  • glass jar for storage, with a lid
Now we are ready to get started!

3 large apples 
2 large handfuls walnuts
2 handfuls raisins
1/3 c yogurt whey, I strained plain full fat yogurt to obtain this
1/3 c honey
1 1/2 t sea salt
3/4 t cinnamon

Wash but do not peel the apples. Dice, set aside. Break the walnuts into pieces, and set them aside. 
Apple Raisin Chutney

Combine the diced apples, broken walnut pieces, and the raisins in a large bowl. If the raisins are sticking together break them apart and mix them into the diced apple pieces.

Add the remaining ingredients, and toss together making sure all of the ingredients are coated well with the honey and the whey. Using a funnel transfer to a storage jar. Attach the lid. 



Let the jar of Apple Raisin Chutney stand on your counter for 3 days, turning the jar to moisten the apple pieces with the accumulating juices daily. Each day you will see the level in the jar shrink as the fruit releases juices and begins the fermentation process.

After 3 days, store in the refrigerator. It is a good keeper as they say, but it will be gone quick as a wink!

Storage options for Apple Raisin Chutney. Once fermented store covered in the refrigerator for up to 6 months, but it will not last that long!
