Dessert Apple Slices, don't pass this delicious treat by...

Do you love homemade apple pie? Maybe short on time to bake one? Never fear, this tasty recipe for Dessert Apple Slices will come in quite handy when the desire for pie strikes!  Because this dish of fruit tastes just like a slice of pie...but the truth is, it is really just a delicious bowl of fruit, healthy and so good!

When you love apple pie! But you are too busy to bake...

Personally, I love apple pie, and that is precisely the problem, I do love it, and would eat the whole dang thing! But if I want to keep wearing my current clothes, which id do, I really don't need to can't eat that much pie. Just know that if eating apple pie was a sport, I would take one for the team, if I needed to…And bring you how with the year end trophy, making me just the person you should call upon to be on your team!

Dessert Apple Slices.

But my husband on the other hand is not the love of pie that I am...

He is an ice cream or anything chocolate guy, all the way. So that created a conundrum for me, how do I get the enjoyment of apple pie without baking an apple pie? One day with enough apples to bake a pie, I played around with the apples, and a bit of sugar,\. Plus my electric pressure cooker. And while I had doubts being new to pressure cooking, I forged right ahead. And I did successfully create and enjoy Dessert Apple Slices after dinner that evening...

So, so good, not a pie, but it sure tastes like it!

The process is simple with a bit of hands-on work peeling the apples. Then you add the sugar and spices and allow the mixture to macerate. During this standing time, the juice from the apples will pool up in the mixing bowl. Once the apples have stopped releasing their juice, transfer the mixture to the cooking vessel for your Electric Pressure Cooker. Secure the lid and once up to pressure, cook for a quick 4-minutes. Followed by a 5-minute NPR rest before releasing the valve.

And with that, you have delicious, tender, perfectly spiced Dessert Apple Slices.
Stir together some honey-sweetened vanilla yogurt or have a bowl of whipped cream ready…because it really is dessert time!

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • apples
  • sugar
  • cinnamon
  • salt
  • vanilla
You will also need the following:
  • Electric Pressure Cooker/Instant Pot
  • paring knife
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • large mixing bowl
  • cutting board
Now we are ready to begin!

4 large or 6 smaller apples, washed, peeled, then cut into thick slices
1/3 c sugar
½ - 1 tsp cinnamon – you can decide your preferred cinnamon level
Dash salt
1 t vanilla

Dessert Apple Slices, as delicious as apple pie!

In a large mixing bowl, toss together the apple slices, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Let the mixture rest in the mixing bowl to allow the sugar to extract the natural juices from the apples (this will be your cooking liquid) for about an hour. Once the liquid has pooled up, stir in the vanilla.

To cook, turn the mixture into the cooking pan/vessel of your electric pressure cooker; securely attach the lid making sure the valve is closed, set cooking time for four minutes.

Note: to be honest, when I developed this recipe I was scared because I am a pressure cooker scaredy-cat concerned that there was not enough liquid to build up steam, but there is. And since the cooking time is only 4 minutes, there is little to no chance of burning. When I opened the cooker after the 5 minute wait time, there was more liquid than when I started because the apples release more juice when cooked…

Important, let rest for 5 minutes only because you want slices, not sauce.

Open the valve, remove the lid when the steam vent has emptied, and gently turn the apple slices into a shallow bowl to finish cooling.

Serve warm or cold with a bit of honey-sweetened vanilla yogurt and a drizzle of whipped cream.

Storage options for Dessert Apple Slices. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You may freeze Dessert Apple Slices, however, expect some loss of texture.
