September went by in a flash! And I have no doubt that October will be just as busy, as we have family visiting from Washington state and a birthday to celebrate. And then there will be Halloween to enjoy as we close out the month, But right now we are going to take a look back at September 2025 as we join Sherry for In My Kitchen!
September started out with a bang and a birthday, my oldest child turned 51!
Yep, that makes me the mother of a middle aged man LOL! We did not celebrate as a family because he lives two states away, or 2,250 miles. But I have no doubt he had the best celebration ever, as he has assured me he is in the best place of his life. And for that I too am blessed. Our weather stayed hot until just a few days ago, but is finally beginning to cool. But my favorite part of September now that we live in Texas is the breezes that come for a visit! We seem to have a soft breeze here in late September through October, and I quite like it.
We tend to stay pretty close to the homestead most of the time,
but even closer these past few weeks. My husband has taken on a part time job and that takes precedence over wandering and exploring. Most of our travels have been to work and back or out for groceries. But being home more has allowed me to tackle some of the larger organization tasks that have been waiting for some cooler weather. One such task is bring all the Christmas décor storage bins up to the Utility shop for safer/cleaner/drier storage. Some tasks needing done simply wait for cooler weather...
The garden is doing great. Even with not much to harvest, at this time.
But for me, gardening also includes what I need to learn for a better harvest next year or next planting. With that said, it is a very good thing that we don't need to eat exclusively from the garden at this time. Because, man o mister, have I had a lot to learn! We will have a harvest of Yukon gold potatoes, and red rose potatoes and sweet potatoes.
I have put a couple of garden beds under mulch for winter, I am hoping to keep the weeds at bay. And I have planted tomatoes and peppers for a winter garden in a simple green house we will build. The pineapples have been a lot of fun, and they are doing great!
But I did not do as well with many of the other crops. Partly it is our soil, and partly it is my lack of knowledge. But the one thing that has held strong for me, has been my enjoyment of building the garden and trying different planting and growing techniques. I will take my successes where I can find them, because that is what keeps us going. I know the harvest will also come.
And saving this for last. While I did not think this loofah plant would grow, it took so long to germinate, it has been such a joy to watch it simply take over all the garden space it could capture!
It won't affect the harvest, and we already had plans to use this plant as a shade canopy with a heavy duty frame to hold it up, in the future.
I was able to publish six new recipes.
But that means I worked on twelve or more that never saw the light of day. Recipe development is often not kind to the cook! Some days it is very good that we have chickens! Yesterday was exactly one of those days, I was working with buckwheat flour, and the end result, looked tasty, had good texture, but the taste was not enjoyable. So it went into the hen's scrap bucket. There is however an upside to something being tossed into the hen's scrap bucket. When I take it out to them after dinner, they are very happy. So much so, that you might think I was bring a whole party for them to celebrate. It does lift my spirits after a difficult day in the kitchen.
Let's take a look, at those recipes...
Easy Banana Cobbler, because my hubby still wants dessert and I still want to bake for him, even when we are busier than ever!
Beef and Potato Meat Loaf. an easy swap for grated potato in place of breadcrumbs makes for a very tasty meatloaf!
Chocolate Loaf Cake. Yes, this is another easy dessert that my husband enjoys. This one though, I cut into slices and freeze individual portions!
And that brings us to the end of what took place in my kitchen, and the supporting roles offered from the family, the garden and those silly chickens! Thanks so much for stopping by, I appreciate it!

That's quite a milestone for both you and your 51 year old son! That makes you about my age or so and I'm am in awe at the amount of physical work you do on that homestead. Your desserts look delicious and I'm intrigued with the swap of grated potato instead of breadcrumbs in your meatloaf. Our weather finally cooled off (down to 49 tonight) but I see it will be back in the mid 80's on Monday...Happy Birthday to your son. Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteJudee as always thank you kindly for your kind comments! I have always worked this hard, often working 2 jobs as a single parent for many years. Now I get to work for me. I now have the time to learn all the things I did not have time for, in previous years. Thanks so much for dropping by!
DeleteHow lovely your son is in the best place of his life. If your children are doing well, that makes such a big difference for a mom. At least it does for me.
ReplyDeleteNicole, yes, our children doing well is the best tonic available. Thank you for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteI need to look at the powered up oatmeal recipe. I love oatmeal but I need more protein in the morning or I feel sick later. I will check it out!
ReplyDeleteI am with you, I now want to experiment with Powered up Granola! Thank you for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteYou are so busy! Wonderful gardening and delicious recipes! Like your blog! Dolly of Hibiscus House
ReplyDeleteDolly, thank you kindly, being so rural, busy is always in great supply. Thank you so much for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteTHat's really from scratch if you grow it too! Nice!
ReplyDeleteLydia it is foolish of me to think I can grow all we eat, but I am having a good time with what we are able to get from the garden. Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteHow handy to have chickens! And wow that loofah plant is huge. Sounds like a busy time in your kitchen. I love to keep busy too. Thanks for joining in this month and have a fab October. Where is the year going to? ...
ReplyDeleteSherry, I quite agree, the year has zoomed by! The chickens keep me guessing, which is it's own reward for having them, after eggs. They have become part pet, part food management and part harvestable "crop". Keeping busy is mandatory here, otherwise a weed would just grow over the top of you! Thank you for dropping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteBirthday blessings for your son! It is amazing when our children are living their best lives. And lucky hens to get what does not work out in the kitchen. Nice to have zero waste :)
ReplyDeleteWell Tandy I must confess, sometimes the chickens are the only ones who know about a kitchen failure! Thanks so much for stopping by, and have a great week ahead.
DeleteBeing a late age mother (medically called geriatric primips) I doubt I'll be still around when my son is 51, so that is a wonderful milestone for you all. I'm so excited about your loofah plant, it's truly one of my favourite vegetables but rarely found in the west (neither in Australia, Canada or France...) My dad grows them at his place every year. Have a great October!
ReplyDeleteMy own daughter is in the came motherhood category as are you. Life is amazing with the journeys we all get to take. I knew you could eat loofah, but I have yet to learn at what stage, we hope to build a very strong frame to grow this each year as a shade canopy as well as a harvestable crop. Thanks so much for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteI love how insightful your posts are to a lifestyle so different to mine out in the country - and it is reassuring to read about how you are learning about looking after your garden (I still find gardening mysterious despite getting a bit better at it) and also love hearing about your chooks cheering you up when recipe testing is not so successful. Enjoy the cooloer months and may your tomatoes thrive in your green houses!
ReplyDeleteJohanna, I agree, the fun is in seeing the differences in all the kitchens, from yours to the Paris apartment! The variety of the food shared is such a inspiring journey for us all. Thank you for stopping by, I appreciate it.
