Stockings from the heart, for Homestead Sunday #14

Welcome to Homestead Sunday, where we share what we have learned, what we do on a regular basis, and what projects we are building, rebuilding or working on. Who are we? We are a three generation family living on six acres in South Eastern Texas.

And while we have only been in Texas a short time, we have had the homestead mentality and lifestyle for quite a few years. Starting out with our time living in Montana. And, although we are not experts in any way, I hope that what we share with you with this series is helpful, as well as inspirational for you and your own homestead journey. Or even with your own home and yard in the suburbs. Because to homestead is an much an action as it is a lifestyle.

I was an adult when I got my first stocking at Christmas time.

We simply did not have stockings at Christmas time in my family, as a kid. Later I understood why, five kids and all the extras needed to fill them on top of what went under the tree. But I have to tell you after my first Christmas with a stocking to start the morning, I was hooked and there have been stockings at every Christmas since!

But not just any stocking, these come with history.

The stockings I fill for my family are handmade for each person. And through the years I have remade stockings because the first one wore out! What we stuff inside is often causal or homemade, but the stocking is where Christmas starts each Christmas morning! This is the stocking I made for my grandson, for his first Christmas, several years ago.

It is large because I know through the years,

the variety of what may be put inside will vary from small (a tiny car or truck) to large (a book I think he may like). It is made of heavy duty material so it will last. And it has some decorative fru-fru on the outside that represents Christmas, that is mostly timeless and will endure as the years go by. Because my plan is to fill this stocking for him, for many years!

And tucked into the toe is this letter to him...

That the stocking was made from the usable parts of a pair of his Dad's worn out trousers. With scraps and thread from his Mom's sewing basket. By his Grandma's hands, because he is loved beyond measure, which is always the real gift of Christmas.

Because, I do love stockings!
