In My Kitchen August, Looking Back on July 2026.

Each month the first IMK post I read is always Sherry's! She starts the group out, even though we need no invitation as we all know the month just turned. And I have to tell you, it wasn't just me that thinks that July could have been better...speaking for East Texas, I have definitely had better months! With that said, please join me and all the rest of the bloggers who visit for In My Kitchen

We did go out of town briefly to celebrate my husband's birthday.

We went to Caddo Lake in Uncertain Texas. It was nice to get away. Even if just for an overnight stay. The area was quiet during our time there, but we were told that on the weekends, the noise does pick up! We really enjoyed learning about the history of the area along with the boat tour of the lake. We had a friendly, knowledgeable boat captain. Who really enjoys giving tours! I think he said he has been doing boat tours for over 17 years, and from how we were treated, he still loves it! My favorite part of the tour? When the Captain explained why we were not required to wear life jackets. It turns out, Caddo Lake is only about four feet deep, even if you fell overboard, all you have to do, is stand up.

We ate homecooked dinners every night. Just like we always do.

Along with homecooked breakfast and lunch, each day. We even had a homecooked meal on our little overnight trip. We took steaks and prebaked potatoes. All we had to do was grill the steaks and heat up the spuds for our dinner. But I did not seem to have the time (success?) for much recipe development right there at home in my kitchen. Call it what you want, no matter how I organized my day, recipe development did not come to fruition. We still ate, but many new ideas did not turn into actual recipes. Some were just off. Some by a lack of flavor or surprise, too much flavor...I did do my usual cooking to keep the pantry and fridge stocked however. Along with the requested baking of bread for my grandson, but all in all July did not feel like a good food month.

What I did have was a busy chicken month, LOL!

This group of chickens had been in the chicken yard about a month when we lost one to a predator.

Predator leftovers, plus take a look at the space between the support bean and the ceiling in the photo on the right...

Plus we had a snake who was in step with the lone chicken that is laying eggs. She would lay, and the snake would snack! When my Son in Law moved the trail cam so we could have a better view of who visits the chicken yard at night, we noticed the snake. But honestly I knew it was time to force the young ones to coop up at night. It was a struggle for a couple of days chasing them around the yard to put them into the coop.

After about 10 days of chasing they caved and started heading for the coop when I/we walked out to the yard to secure the gate on the coop. Whew, glad this has been accomplished, because this whole chicken training is about as much fun as herding cats!

So Melynda, did you do anything new on the blog you can brag about?

Just popcorn and snacks my friends, popcorn and snacks!

In fairness the popcorn is quite healthy as it is air popped, then spritzed with olive oil before getting a sprinkle of sea salt. And all the snacks in the round-up? They are all whole grain or unrefined sugar, or made with whole food ingredients! And have been made in my kitchen, through the years.

I am hoping to get back on track for August, and with good follow through. You know on all the stuff, I thought I would get done, in July!

  1. I love that name! Uncertain! is that the name of the town? We have a similar lake here in Queensland which is incredibly shallow too. So odd. Thanks for joining in this month. I've had to add posts manually as Inlinkz is not doing its thing so they are not appearing on my post! Grrrr.... Have a great month, and see you in september!
    cheers

    1. Sherry, thank you for hosting, and yes, that is the name of the town. Legend has it, that the boat Captains during trips through the lake, would not know if they were in Texas or Louisiana, which led to that area being called Uncertain Texas.

  2. Nothing wrong with popcorn and snacks ;). We often have snakes in our garden which is not something I enjoy to say the least, as they are killers where we live. I love the place name Uncertain! But it certainly sounds like you had a good time away :)

    1. Tandy I do appreciate that those in our chicken yard and the garden are largely harmless. But I am also very glad, I don't have to take care of the removal! Thanks so much for stopping by, I appreciate it!

  3. oh your chickens are gorgeous! and I do love a cosy home meal.. I'm getting to the age that eating out excites me less and less, and a good homemade meal comforts me more and more, is it time to be old yet? I do love popcorn too, but unfortunately there is no such thing as a good amount of popcorn for one person (they are supposed to be not adapted to babies and my husband hates popcorn..) I need to find a popcorn loving friend here...

    1. D O S, I do love popcorn! And was happy to find a more nutritious way to enjoy it. I have learned with age, we are all still young on the inside, it is just the outside that gets tired...but I have also learned that a cozy meal is also feeds the heart. Thank you for stopping by, I always enjoy our conversations.

  5. You had me at Uncertain, Texas - saw the explanation above. What a great name -- Good looking chickens and quite a variety. Been there, done that in herding them in -- only ours were supposed to be cooped all the time. Once they escaped, they did NOT want to go back and could devise all sorts of evasive maneuvers!
