What are your guidelines for buying used books? Do you have deal breakers regarding used books? I think I do, but when I was presented with an opportunity to be kind always, I took it! Come and learn about staffmeals, one of the most delicious group of "elbows on the table" food you will ever make for friends and family!
I went to a yard sale many years ago.
It was held outside, but in all honesty the household belongings still smelled of her favorite cigarettes. I thought seriously of just saying, "thank you" and returning to my car, and leaving. But there was this one cookbook, that for some reason held my interest. And Man O Mister did I ever want it! Was it a bit stained as things become when sitting in a room with a smoker? Yes. But to be perfectly honest with you, it also smelled faintly of my mother's cookbooks. A smell that would take me back to the good memories I held, being in my mother's kitchen. And instantly I knew that it was my job to be kind, in all things...
While I have always been a serious collector,
I have almost always collected vintage items, including most of the cookbooks I had in my 3000 plus cookbook collection! I do love new cookbooks, and have purchased many myself in years past. As well as received many as gifts. But for me, thrifting is the fun part and I do love vintage housewares and unusual cookbooks! Now I will also admit, I can also be a bit of a cheapskate, and the price she had on this cookbook seemed high for the condition it was in. But, again, it is my job to be kind in all things...
Want to make!
What was I to do?
Well the one thing I was not going to do, was ask for a discount due to the light smoke staining and smell. You see, I come from a family of smokers, and until recent years, was the only non-smoker in our group. But I too was a smoker, quitting well before getting pregnant with my first child (over 50 years ago!). Also I have over 20 years serving adults in Assisted Living as well as Senior Housing. So I knew first hand, how very, very hard it is to quit smoking. Even when it puts your housing in jeopardy. You see, there is nothing like working in a field where two emotionally charged factors, health and housing come together, to teach you to be kind in all things...
Want to make!
I knew that in time the smell would dissipate.
And while the staining could be considered unsightly she had respected this cookbook. How did I know that? Well for starters, it still had the dust jacket intact and in place. And none of the pages were turned down at the corners to mark a recipe. But the best part? The dust jacket had a dry splatter or two left behind from her actually using the book! Just like my mother's...so I took out the required amount to make the purchase, carried the book to where she was busy tidying things up, said thank you as I handed her the money and headed to my car. Yes, kindness in all things...
Want to make!
This is one of my favorite books to open and enjoy reading.
The smell began leaving and within a month was almost gone, hardly even noticeable anymore. I have so many sticky strips marking all the recipes calling out to me, to be made, like Spaghetti with Potatoes and Greens on page 280. The Soba Salad on page 337. Among many others. We have already enjoyed many times the Herbed Summer Humus, which starts out with canned garbanzo beans, on page 317. And of course the wonderful Cream Cheese Pound Cake, on page 412. Which also makes a wonderful strawberry (or peach!) shortcake...and now after purchasing this book, I know it was the right decision for me. Yes, kindness in all things...
Absolutely one of my favorite books to cook from!
I have no doubt some of the best family style food in New York was served for staffmeals! Before the restaurant doors opened to a hungry pubic each evening. With all the staff around the table, enjoying fresh cooked food together. And after the shared meal, only then was it was time to carry on with keeping Chanterelle a New York hot spot for those same 30 years! I hope I have encouraged you to consider, purchasing and using vintage books, because you just never know where you will find your next favorite dish!
About Chanterelle.
Chanterelle was a New York restaurant for 30 years prior to it's closing. The menu changed twice a year. It would be planned and decided upon, running for a six month period of time. And then a new menu would be offered! Twice a year, new recipes to perfect and offer to the patrons with new menus being printed. While the menus would highlight the food, they were also finely detailed with art of many different genres through the years.
