Onion Island Salad Dressing, my husband's new favorite 1000 Island style dressing that we make at home. Perfect for the salad days of spring and summer, and any time of year. Especially when you are a year round salad eating family!
And while I enjoy his eating food just the way he wants it, I try real hard to (when ever possible) make it at home. I have recently started making my own mayonnaise and while perfecting that recipe as of yet, I learned that even less than perfect mayo makes a great salad dressing. It is my standard kitchen policy to keep developing our homemade recipes until they are perfect. Now that doesn't mean they are not edible or delicious even, but in my book a thick mayo is needed for sandwiches. And yet mayo homemade or otherwise is all you need to make a delicious and creamy salad dressing. This is the second batch of Onion Island Salad Dressing to be enjoyed by my husband. And yes, you know what happened, I got asked "are you going to blog this?"
To be honest there is not a lot to say about making your own salad dressing.
None of the dressings and vinaigrettes you will find here are difficult to make, and almost always calling for easy to find ingredients and a simple stir it all together method, and, you are done. But they are all fresh made and use the ingredients that you already have, with none of the ingredients that you don't want. Such as preservatives, or thickening agents or that mysterious ingredient, natural flavor. Where does that come from anyway? Some online discussions are quite lively....
In the world of blogging the more you say about a recipe the more likely it is that folks will stick around longer on your post. But I think I have already said all of the important stuff about this recipe, except this last thought. You will want to make this salad dressing. Yes, it is a little bit different than the standard 1000 Island dressing we have all come to know and love. But then again many of the best recipes do fall into that category! And this is one of those recipes, the more we make this recipe the better we like it. Plus it is also delicious as a sandwich spread and before I forget, it is the perfect dunk for crisp vegetables.
Ingredients needed for this recipe:
- mayonnaise
- catsup
- sweet pickles
- Quick Pickled Onions, recipe found here.
- garlic salt
- fresh ground pepper
You will also need the following:
- measuring spoons
- measuring cups
- storage jar with lid
- kitchen knife
- cutting board
- kitchen spoon
Now we are ready to begin!
Onion Island Salad Dressing
by the seat of my pants!
1 c mayonnaise, we use our favorite homemade mayo
1/4 c catsup
6-8 slices bread and butter style sweet pickles
or
1 small Sweet Pickle
1 heaping T Quick Pickled Onions
2 T Sweet Pickle Brine
1 T Quick Pickled Onion Brine
dash garlic salt
fresh ground pepper
Place the mayonnaise, catsup, garlic salt and pepper into the storage container ( I usually use a pint canning jar with lid).
Add the pickle brine and the Quick Pickled Onion brine.
Chop the onions and the sweet pickle, add them to the other ingredients and stir well. When the ingredients are all mixed together, put the lid on and store in the refrigerator.
Use as desired for tossed greens, or as a dunk for cucumber slices, carrot and celery sticks. And that sandwich at lunch time just got better!
Storage options for Onion Island Salad Dressing. Store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Do not freeze.

ReplyDeleteHelen, thank you and thanks for hosting What's For Dinner Sunday, I appreciate it!
DeleteI have to admit, I am not a fan of 1000 island dressing. I have done vinegar and oil at home. The closest homemade dressing for ranch. I use the packet that calls for buttermilk!
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing,
Take care and best wishes.
Debra, you are welcome, thanks so much for hosting!
DeleteWow, I've never seen this but it seems something similar to a bell pepper spread that I used to make. Pinned and saved to try it out!
ReplyDeleteMariama, I hope you enjoy this as much as we do!
