It has been a truly wonderful year! Earlier this year we had journeyed to East Texas after time as National Park Volunteers, with all the family volunteering. Being all together made the volunteer experience even more enjoyable. Unfortunately we practically lost our home in Wyoming during our volunteer time, but once the dust was settled and the home repaired we knew we had to make one last move...
Blogging about scratch made food, time with family and a Do It Yourself way of life has always been my genre for over 20 years as a blogger. And I wish to offer my sincere thanks to all who visit here, because your visits keep me as inspired to continue this blog, as my love for family does!
Now that we have been here in East Texas awhile, and getting settled, I feel like East Texas is home! I invite you to take a look at the Top 10 for 2024. And say, thank you for being my guest here at Scratch Made Food! & DIY Homemade Household, you visits always make my day!
#1. This post is new for the top spot on this list. But I have to say cooking and especially baking, with whole grains is beginning to sweep across all state or even country boundaries! And as a proponent of a whole grain life, I could not be happier to make your own journey that much easier...
#1. As I have shared in this original post, we did NOT start out 100% whole wheat. I did have concerns about the acceptance of whole wheat as the main ingredient in our food after decades of all purpose flour baking. The answer? Percentages my friends, percentages! My first batch was 50% whole wheat and all purpose flours. And it was so well received, I threw in the towel on the second batch and went whole wheat all the way. Never have I looked back...
But not only do I offer the recipe for Whole Wheat Self-Rising Flour, I offer delicious recipes that call for it as well. It just shows you can bake it easy and delicious, at the same time!
#2. The answer does beg to be asked, why not just go and buy one? Which is a perfectly valid question, by the way! The answer? Because they are so uncomfortable! Yes the commercial wedge pillows are expensive, but in all honesty, good health is wealth.
So it really wasn't just the money. But I had paid the retail price at the store only to find it was too uncomfortable to use....so you do know what I did. I made my own. Not perfect by any mean, but comfortable? Yes!
#3. This one brings a smile to my face (and heart!). This is how my Dad enjoyed his beans. It is a recipe written down after making is from memories. Recipes don't get better than that!
#4. I love having a quick alternative for pressure or even water bath canning during busy times! And this recipe is perfect for that small basket of tomatoes you picked from the garden, received in a CSA or even picked up at the market. You will love the fresh tomato flavor when winter hits your area...
#5. When food is freshly harvested the price is always competitive. but later on, as supplies dwindle and the price climbs! One way to enjoy apple pie is to turn to dried apples, either purchased or better still, prepared by you, from your own tree! Dried Apple Pie was a staple in yesteryear because apples were prepared by drying and those are the apples used in cooking. Plus it is easy, add a bit of boiling water and let the fruit take a drink, then proceed to prepare the pie for baking!
#6. If you are a custard fan, this is the recipe that made your heart happy! No more water bath in the oven, and since it is now so easy to make, you can enjoy it more often! A wonderful high protein dessert, that has stood the test of time...
#7. This easy does it post fits nicely in our, use it up, make do, or do without way of life and personal philosophy. That many others are turning to. Why? Because not spending money is better than having to earn it, think of the time saved...time you could use for fun or to just relax. Making this grit from something most throw away is really a blessing. If your own chickens are eating the eggs they just laid, they just might be looking for grit...
#8. Another delicious "recipe" written down from memories as I watched and often helped my mother in the kitchen. This is a family size recipe, but it is so delicious that I made a small batch version, as well!
#9. Was I surprised this hit the top 10? More than you could ever imagine. Apparently I am not the only one who has trouble getting in enough water each day. But plain water is boring, good for us yes, but other beverages just as hydrating add variety, like this one!
#10. This pie like many of the recipes I develop are for the love of family and our collective enjoyment of good food! This pie calls out to all who love the ooey gooey center! People like my daughter!
