Recently I remembered a conversation from many years ago about a grape salad made with red grapes, that was always served for special occasions. A vintage recipe that was looked forward to by just about everyone ready to sit down to dinner! Grape and Banana Fruit Medley, updated for everyone to enjoy once again...
While seedless grapes, Thompson Seedless Grapes especially have been around for many years, it wasn't until recent times that red grapes are also available in a seedless variety. And while I would not necessarily turn down a freshly washed bunch of green Thompson Seedless Grapes, my heart belongs to the fruity red grapes available. The elongated red grapes are a bit different with a tougher outside skin, but still juicy and delicious. But, yes, my favorites are the round red globes that call out to me each time they are in the marketplace.
This is the second recipe I am purposely sharing after a holiday, and for good reason. This recipe for Grape and Banana Fruit Medley is too good to only be made for a holiday meal. Why? Because this is one recipe you will want to pull out and make when the red globe grapes first hit the marketplace. When they are so crisp they burst open when bitten into! You may be asking what was the first recipe? Well that would be Cranberry Dried Cherry (and a jigger of gin!) Sauce. Because it will be a wonderful dinner companion to just about any roast you will want to serve...
Grape and Banana Fruit Medley can be made two ways. For a fruit salad, use the smaller measure of brown sugar or leave it out completely. But for a fruit dessert the brown sugar and sour cream create a delicious topping to mix into the fruit. The crispy walnuts add their own personality to the mix, so don't leave them out! But like many recipes made around here, ingredients can be swapped out for one another. When I am out of walnuts, pecans step in and do a great job...At our house, we enjoyed this for dessert one night, and I can't wait to make it again.
Some additional thoughts on this recipe:
The recipe as written will serve two or three folks, simply double or triple for a larger group.
Seeded grapes are still available in the marketplace, if you buy them, it will be OK, since the grapes are cut in half before being added to the sour cream. The seeds are easy to remove at that point.
You can get all the ingredients ready before hand, but slice the banana at the last moment to avoid it from turning brown.
Don't let the humble look of this recipe fool you, this is one delicious bowl of fruit!
Ingredients needed for this recipe:
- banana
- red grapes
- walnuts
- sour cream
- brown sugar
You will also need the following:
- kitchen knife
- cutting board
- measuring cups
- small mixing bowl
- serving bowl.
Now we are ready to begin!
Grape and Banana Fruit Medley
adapted from so many great cooks before me!
1 large banana
1 cup red globe seedless grapes
1/3 to 1/2 c walnut pieces
1/4 c sour cream
1 to 2 T brown sugar
Wash, dry and cut the grapes in half lengthwise. Set aside.
Place the sour cream and the brown sugar into the mixing bowl, mix together until creamy.
Add the grape halves and stir gently.
Peel and slice the banana into the grape sour cream mixture along with half of the walnut pieces. Fold together gently.
If desired, transfer the fruit mixture to a serving bowl, and top with the remaining walnut pieces.
Serve immediately.
Storage options for Grape and Banana Fruit Medley. Store leftovers in the refrigerator covered for up to three days. You may notice some browning of the banana slices. Do not freeze this recipe.
