If you are looking to make more of your pantry staples from scratch, this is a good list to not only take a look, but start making. All our recipes are tried and true, don't take all day and use whole food ingredients. Come and do take a look at The Recipes We Make on Repeat to Keep Our Pantry Stocked, and begin your own pantry restock, right there, at home.
Reality is I spend a lot of time in the kitchen,
but not because I am a food blogger. Ironically I am a food blogger, because I do spend so much time in the kitchen! I cook our food from scratch, for a number of reasons. It is fresher, has less chemicals and it tastes better. With high food costs, homemade is often less expensive. Or if not less expensive, a better product than can be purchased. It turned out, that somewhere along the last few decades cooking for my family and as a job, I have learned a thing or two about eating well and home cooking.
Such as, it doesn't have to take all day to be delicious. And, we all need easy to make, delicious tasting recipes that are made from whole food ingredients. Because eating healthy food and preparing daily meals doesn't come to an end in any of the homes I have ever lived in! And more importantly it doesn't have to be difficult! Eating well can be an adventure, and like most adventures, a little preplanning keeps it all on track...
This counter line up was set up during the day when I realized I needed to cook "something" to keep the pantry full. Today it was Brown Rice for the freezer, and make a pot of Sweet Onion Beans for my hubby. Plus I need to refill the brown rice cannister...
Around here grocery day can be a busy one,
with driving to the market and back, then putting everything away. One reason for the busyness, is that we are quite rural and one of the markets we shop at, is 90 minutes out, one way. We go to our favorite big box store every couple of months to stock up. Buying for two months at a time, is a chore. On the other days it our market destination is only 45 minutes, out. About three towns over from our little community. To keep things manageable I aim for not having to make any of our homemade pantry staples, on marketing day. Replenishing our pantry staples is saved for another day.
As you can imagine a few of these recipes like our Whole Wheat and Honey Bread or Grandma's Two Day Sweet Pickle Slices take more than a few minutes to make. But even those two recipes can be broken down into very doable and easy to manage steps that do not interfere with everything else you may need to get done. And then there are other recipes such as Chocolate Sugar or Whole Wheat Self-Rising Flour that only take about 5 minutes! But truthfully each and every recipe is easy to accomplish.
Sometimes in the evenings as I wash up the dinner dishes, I check for pantry cannisters that need refilling, along with any produce from the fruit bowl to be used. The all go in a line-up on the end of the counter. The next morning, I know instantly what needs attending to or to be used, to avoid waste. A simple yet easy system.
All and all restocking our pantry doesn't take all day,
because just like at your house, we don't run out of everything all at once, fortunately! I try to keep tabs of how low a pantry container may be getting, that way I can plan on refilling it, without being caught off guard. The last thing I want to do is create a work schedule that takes over my entire day. My guess is, it won't surprise you to learn that (also just like you), I have more to do around our home and property than just keeping the pantry filled.
And honestly, it is important to note once again, that there are not empty jars and cannisters needing a refill each day. Mayonnaise is maybe once a month, same for the Chocolate Sugar. Bread is planned out, but I make four loaves at a time. Same with the Sweet Onion Beans my husband enjoys with a sandwich, the recipe is divided into four cartons for freezing. The variety of what I work on each day is enjoyable, but more importantly, we eat a whole lot better because of it! When you fill the jar yourself, you already know what is inside. And what you are actually eating...
And one additional note,
in our household the word pantry is used to indicate a storage space. We include freezer storage, along with inside the home food storage shelves and a shelf or two in the canning kitchen to hold our home canned goods, as our pantry.
Our Pantry List:
Chocolate Sugar If you are a mocha drinker in the morning, now you can make your own at home! Plus it works great for hot cocoa.
Stick Blender Mayonnaise When avocado mayo got to be almost $9 a jar at Costco, I learned to make my own...
Whole Wheat Self-Rising Flour This easy pantry mix was a game changer for me, from easy oven baked pancakes to traditional Welsh Tea Cake, we have you covered.
Grandma's Two Day Sweet Pickle Slices, no canning required We eat a lot of sweet pickle slices, and this recipe makes it easy to enjoy them the year round.
Dry Bread Crumbs I think it goes without saying this is one of the easiest pantry ingredients to make, and one you will use often.
Homemade Brown Sugar This is a guarantee of organic brown sugar in your baked goods.
Easy Crock-Pot Dried Apricot Butter. Delicious as is for toast, this is also a valued ingredient for different recipes and cooking techniques.
Whole Wheat and Honey Bread This is our daily bread. I also bake this for my grandson, who has his entire life only eaten whole wheat bread.
Specialty/Variety Bread While we love our daily bread, there is nothing better than a taste surprise once in awhile.
Granola Like pesto, granola never needs to be boring. The shared link offers all our favorites to choose from in one convenient location.
Whole Fruit Organic Applesauce The name says it all, apples should always be organic...
Quick and Easy Marinara Sauce. This easy and delicious recipe is a substitute for jarred sauce from the market. This recipe makes the equivalent of three jars...
Pesto Pesto comes in many flavors at our house, we shared all our favorites in this convenient link.
House Brand Catsup Because catsup does not need chemicals...
Honey Simple Syrup Perfect to stir into a beverage, or any place honey is needed.
No Boil Yogurt in Your IP For the yogurt lovers out there. My daughter's family makes a pot of yogurt almost each week.
Chocolate Syrup Perfect for chocolate milk, drizzling over ice cream or other desserts. My guess is, you will find lots of additional uses for this delicious syrup.
Diced and Ready to Use Frozen Onions While this may seem redundant, I can't be the only cook to get to the bottom of the bag of onions only to find they have gotten soft and moldy. Never again with this easy solution....
Ready to Use Minced Garlic Why take the time? Because there are no chemicals and you can use your own home grown garlic or organic garlic from the marketplace.
Cooked Brown Rice Brown rice gets a bad rap, for time required to cook among other things. But cooking ahead with this process produces Brown Rice that is tender and ready to go, this recipe is packaged in meal sized portions and frozen for convenience.
Make Ahead Meatballs This recipe comes in two flavors, All Beef or with Italian Sausage. And yes, for the chorizo lovers out there, wouldn't that be delicious too? Perfect to pull out on the busy days, because they go into the freezer cooked, just thaw and enjoy.
Sweet Onion Beans This side dish is one of my husband's favorites, and if you are looking for bean recipes the family will enjoy, this just might be your starting place...cook a pot of beans weekly.
Mustard Oregano Chicken or Chops. This marinade goes on the meat before freezing, offering a quick dinner by baking or grilling!
Whole Wheat Ricotta Gnocchi These are so delicious to have on hand in the freezer. They cook up quick and add elegance to your meals. Not a bad make ahead convenience food, if I do say so myself!
Rough and Ready Laundry Soap Frugal to make, gets your laundry clean, and it can be used as a stain treater for ground in dirt. Actual hands on time required to make it is, a few minutes day one and a few minutes more on day two.
Homemade Dish Soap We wash a lot of dishes around here, with no dishwasher except the human kind! This has no chemicals that you need to be concerned about, and it works.
Grit for our Backyard Chickens We save all our egg shells, some are used for this grit in our chicken feed, the rest, we use in the garden.
Dandelion Salve You will never look at dandelions in a negative light ever again! Not only is this easy to make, it is a fun project to do with your young helpers. Be sure to make a batch each spring when the "lions" bloom!
Salad Dressing and Vinaigrettes. If there was one area to begin, it is with this staple. But no one wants to eat the same dressing all the time, so we offer this link to all 19 recipes we enjoy!

This is such a great resource, Melynda! There are so many wonderful recipes for fresh, unprocessed food. I particularly like the chocolate sugar and Grandma's Two Day Pickles. I will be featuring this post at the February 2025 edition of Hearth and Soul, going live on Sunday 2nd February. Thank you for sharing!

DeleteYou have so many fabulous recipes on here! Now that we're well into winter and I've used up much of the stock of things I made this summer (our pickles, our jams, our pasta sauce, etc.) I really miss them. The store bought stuff just does not compare and I'm hopeful to make even more this summer now that I know I can... and branch out even more.
ReplyDeleteJoanne, I like being able to be able to feed the family without a mandatory trip to the store, this list of recipes is how I do it! Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteI should give the onions I try as I don't cook often enough to think of using mine up in time before they sprout!
ReplyDeleteCat, the sprouting did not bother me, but the mold or rot below the outside skin, did. Even onions are not cheap anymore. Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
DeleteYou always share some of the best recipes and today is no exception - thank you! #WednesdayLinkUpParty
