Honey and Applesauce Cake, a delicious whole grain dessert!

Just because I cook and bake using whole food ingredients, doesn't mean I want to give up dessert! And to make sure I don't have to, I enjoy finding and trying naturally sweetened and whole foods desserts. And I have to tell you, this Honey and Applesauce Cake ticks all the boxes!

Easy to put together from your pantry. This cake calls for simple, basic ingredients.

While Honey and Applesauce Cake is quite perfect just the way it is, it is also an easy to make recipe that will inspire you to make more whole grain cakes to share with family and friends. Having success with a new to you recipe inspires most bakers to find more recipes to bake of a similar nature. After all, why reinvent the wheel every time you step into the kitchen?

While this is one of those recipes, it goes one better. The basic cake recipe almost begs you to bake it again, with flavor changes! Depending on what you prefer, just about any dried fruit or nuts can be substituted. The only ingredient that you may be missing is the sliced almonds. Speaking for myself, I don't always have them on hand...I have added some suggestions below to offer a new twist to this same recipe, for the next time you make it, that is!

Another delicious "no mixer required!" recipe.

This recipe starts out with very basic ingredients, which means if your pantry is stocked, you can whip this up at a moment's notice. Honey Applesauce Cake is also what I like to refer to as a wooden spoon recipe because you don't need any electric appliances, just the ingredients, a large bowl, and a wooden spoon. We baked this in a pie pan, but feel free to use either a round or square pan for this cake. Personally I like wedges of dessert, they present so nicely on a plate. This could also be baked in cupcakes as well. Not overly sweet, this is subtle and quite tender.

Much like most of the desserts we offer, this is delicious plain or with a bit of cream, in one form or another!

Honey Applesauce Cake is perfectly delicious just the way it is, but by now you may have noticed, that a bit of cream on the side, is my favorite way to enjoy my desserts! This cake would also be lovely with a spoon of vanilla yogurt and a drizzle of honey, tonight, however, we opted for whipped cream, for tonight. When served plain Honey Applesauce Cake also makes a great snack with a glass of milk or a steaming cup of tea or coffee. But whatever you do, I encourage you to make this cake! It is easy and will take to the following suggestions for a new flavored cake the next time you bake it!

Some additional thoughts on this recipe:

There is no limit to the basic flavor changes that could be made to this cake, here are two easy suggestions.

Chopped raisins and walnuts in place of the sliced almonds would be wonderful. To upscale even more, a chocolate drizzle glaze.

I also think a streusel topping would be quite nice and completely change the personality of the finished cake! A little drizzle of glaze would set that presentation off perfectly.

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • whole wheat flour
  • honey
  • eggs
  • applesauce
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • vanilla
  • raisins
  • sliced almonds
You will also need the following:
  • large mixing bowl
  • wooden spoon
  • silicone spatula
  • small kitchen knife
  • cutting board
  • round baking pan
  • measuring spoons
  • measuring cups
Now we are ready to begin!

    1. I couldn't agree more, but with applesauce available year round, so can this cake. It is not a traditional spiced apple cake...

  7. I'm going to have to try this one. My son loves applesauce, but doesn't eat any other sweets like cake, candy, or ice cream. Maybe we could lure him into one sweet with this!
