Honey Walnut and Hemp Heart Granola with Dried Blueberries!

Honey Walnut and Hemp Hearts Granola with Dried Blueberries! Easy to make, and the perfect breakfast when time is short. Whole foods in your breakfast bowl never tasted so good!

It was time for a new flavor of granola!

I/we eat granola or oatmeal almost daily. I say almost because this past week it has not been part of our breakfast, due to the fact we had run out of granola in our kitchen! Yikes, time to make another batch, and with that, it was time to make another flavor to enjoy. Which is how Honey Walnut and Hemp Heart Granola with Dried Blueberries came to be! We have several recipes of granola that we enjoy and each offers a specific nut as the center point for flavor. But this granola recipe has a new flavor twist, dried blueberries are added after baking and cooling.

While I do use a formula, each granola recipe has individual features.

If you look at each of the granola recipes I offer, you will see that all of the recipes have pumpkin seeds. Why? Not only are they delicious in granola, and offer a long list of vitamins and minerals, my main purpose is the magnesium they offer. Magnesium is an essential mineral and homemade granola is a tasty way to get some every day! Of course, the delicious crunchy taste of Honey Walnut and Hemp Heart Granola with Dried Blueberries is not too bad either...Because hemp hearts contain a healthy dose of protein, it seemed only natural to put some into my morning granola.

Granola is easy to make, with a minimum of time invested.

Granola is really so easy to make, a few minutes to stir it together. A half-hour to bake, then a short cooling period with a couple more stirs and you have a batch of granola for healthy breakfasts ready to go right in your own cupboard. Plus a bowl of granola is one breakfast the kids can help themselves to on those busy mornings. And one final note, while I am not a nutritionist, I do use whole food ingredients in all my recipes and enjoy knowing the nutritional value they offer my family.

Are you also a granola loving family?

My guess is you or someone in your family also loves granola. If so you have come to the right place because we have eight granola recipes shared here at Scratch Made Food! & DIY Homemade Household. Most are refined sugar free made with honey and real maple syrup. They are all made with whole foods. They all taste good and are a perfect breakfast. Plus once made up and ready to go, everyone can help themselves to a good breakfast, and be out the door on time.

Some thoughts on this recipe:

Adding dried fruit is new for me, I do not add dried fruit to granola when it is baking. The fruit dries out and is often hard to chew.

But for a special flavor zing, this batch gets dried blueberries added when cool and ready to package up.

But please if you love dried fruit baked into your granola, add as much as you like. After all, you are cooking for your family!

If you are new to enjoying hemp hearts, you may want to start with a half measure and work up from there. I enjoy the flavor, but we all have our own taste preferences.

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • rolled oats
  • honey
  • coconut oil
  • pumpkin seeds
  • hemp hearts
  • molasses
  • salt
  • walnuts
  • vanilla
  • dried blueberries
You will also need the following:
  • large mixing bowl
  • measuring cups
  • measuring spoons
  • silicone spatula
  • large flat baking pan
  • storage container with a tight-fitting lid
Now we are ready to begin!

Honey Walnut and Hemp Heart Granola with Dried Blueberries.
by the seat of my pants!
350-degree oven

5 c rolled oats
1 1/2 - 2 c walnut pieces
1 c hemp hearts
1 c pumpkin seeds
1  c honey
1/2 c melted coconut oil
1 T molasses
2 t vanilla
1/4 t salt
1 1/2 c dried blueberries

Take one large mixing bowl and spray lightly with pan spray. (so much easier to clean up!)

Then add and combine the melted coconut oil, honey, molasses, vanilla, salt, and hemp hearts. Mix well coating the hemp hearts with the honey mixture.

Next, add the rolled oats, mix well.

Add finally the pumpkin seeds and the walnut pieces, again mix well.

Turn into a prepared large flat baking pan. Note: I prefer to use pan spray when baking with honey.

Spread evenly in the baking pan, bake for 15 minutes. Stir gently bringing the outside corners into the center of the pan, and push the contents from the center outward to the corners of the pan.

Smooth into an even layer. Bake an additional 10 minutes.

Stir once more, bake for 5 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from the oven and set on a wire rack to cool.

Set a timer for 8 minutes, gently stir the granola.

This time set the timer for 5 minutes, stirring the granola gently but thoroughly to let the heat out!. The goal is to cool the granola without it sticking together in one giant granola bar!

Let cool completely. Stir in the dried blueberries.

Store in a large covered container with a tight-fitting lid.

Storage options for Honey Walnut and Hemp Heart Granola with Dried Blueberries. Store in a covered container with a tight-fitting lid or a freezer storage bag for up to four months. But it probably won't last that long. If you have concerns about keeping this granola fresh, feel free to store half in the freezer. It will keep there for at least 6 months, simply thaw and enjoy!

  6. Hi Melynda. Found you at TFT where I'm also sharing today at #85. I LOVE making homemade granola but have not added pumpkin seeds or dried blueberries before. For me, it is all about the dried cranberries or dried cherries. Thank you for the nudge - can't wait to try your recipe. :)
