Pear Creme Pie

With only four large pears, and a handful of other ingredients you can create this delicious Pear Creme Pie that the whole family will love. With the fall crop of pears in the markets, now is a good time to bake this pie!

It doesn't matter what you call it, it is delicious!

This pie is delicious! I have taken creative license to give it a slight rename, from Pear Pie to Pear Creme Pie. However, it does not contain any cream. Making it perfect for those who enjoy their desserts dairy free. But the truth is, many desserts in frugal times, had no cream. Sugar and eggs formed a creamy filling when combined with fruit. And this pie is no exception.

A pie made from pears, was new to me!

Not only had I  never heard of Pear Pie, I most likely would not have made one. Which would have been a big mistake!  Because this Pear Creme Pie is so good! And proof that opening one's mind to new recipes and combinations of ingredients, is really a very good idea...needless to say, I am glad I came across this recipe.

This pie is enhanced with a whole wheat pie crust, which gives the rich (but not too sweet) filling a crunchy, and nutty contrast in flavor. You may add a bit of whipped cream or ice cream when you serve up a slice if you like, but this pie is absolutely wonderful just the way it comes from the oven.

If you love pie, you will love Pear Creme Pie...

Fruit desserts are a favorite around here. And serving a fruit based dessert is an easy way to get more fruit into your meal plans. But I have to admit, that I am just as bad as the kids when I tell myself "why not just have a pear for dessert", because truthfully, I am no more interested than they are! But a slice of this Pear Creme Pie well that is a whole different situation!

Use the biggest and freshest pears at the market.

It was suggested that you use Bosc pears in this recipe, but when I went to the market all they had were these beautiful Bartlett pears. Which is what I put into my shopping cart. I can tell you this, the delicious way this pie turned out tells me that any ripe pear could be used for this pie, and probably have been, through the years.

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • fresh pears
  • your favorite pie crust
  • sugar
  • flour
  • egg
  • vanilla
  • salt
  • cardamom or nutmeg
  • butter
You will also need the following:
  • kitchen knife
  • cutting board
  • medium sized mixing bowl
  • whisk
  • pie plate, for baking
Now you are ready to begin!

1 9 inch pie crust, use your favorite recipe, we like this one

4 large pears, peeled and sliced
3/4 c sugar
1/4 c flour
1 egg
2 t vanilla
dash salt

1 1/2 T butter, cut into small pieces

cardamom or nutmeg to sprinkle over the top - if desired

Wash and dry the pears. Peel and slice into thick lengthwise slices. Place pear slices into the pie crust.

In the medium sized mixing bowl, Combine sugar, flour, egg, vanilla, and salt. Using the whisk, beat until creamy.

Spread mixture over the surface of the pears in the pie shell. Dot with butter. Dust the top of the pie with cardamom or nutmeg if desired.

Chunky pear slices make a delicious Pear Creme Pie.

Bake in a preheated 450-degree oven for 10 minutes, reduce heat to 350, bake 30-45 minutes, or until golden and done in your oven.

Let cool completely before serving.
