DIY Homemade Household Weed Killer!

Looking for an effective weed killer that won't poison your pets or your yard? Well, this is it, at least it is for us. It works perfectly in our gravel walkway...and it only calls for three simple ingredients and an old fashion pump sprayer.

This is my favorite weed killer!

DIY Homemade Household Weed Killer has been the perfect way to keep weeds under control in the gravel courtyard we put in last year to combat the snow run-off problem. Hand weeding any gravel space is not fun, using our homemade week killer is the perfect solution for weed control.

When I said only three ingredients I meant it. Plus you will most likely already have them in your pantry right now. And the mixing process is just as easy...come take a peek!

DIY Homemade Household Weed Killer!

Ingredients needed:
  • 1 gallon of plain white vinegar
  • 1 pound table salt
  • 1/4 c Dawn dish liquid
You will also need:
  • pump garden sprayer
  • a long-handled spoon
Let's get started!

Remove the lid/pump with the attached spray wand and set it aside.

Pour the vinegar, salt, and the Dawn dish soap, into the pump tank. Turn the spoon upside down and use to stir gently until the salt has dissolved.

Reattach the lid, and use the handle to pump air into the sprayer tank to create pressure.

Now you are ready to kill weeds!

I spray weeds as soon as I see them, but they do grow fast, so they are usually this size when the sprayer comes out. I spray until the entire plant has been coated with the liquid.

Later that afternoon, the same weed, almost dead...

And the next day...dead!

After mixing up a batch of DIY Homemade Household Weed Killer, when I need to use it again, I shake the pump gently just in case the salt has settled. Then just pump and spray!

I like it best when there are no weeds in the gravel courtyard...

  1. This has been my favorite weed killer forever! When I was younger, I remember my grandmother using the dishsoap to make this, way before Dawn was around.

    1. Yikes, you must have SUPER WEEDS there! I have used it with consistent results since putting in our gravel courtyard, and wish you could have the same results. Weeding by hand in gravel is not my favorite past time...

  6. I'm inspired to try this. I'm tired of spraying poisons around my yard. Plus it's much less expensive.

    1. It is perfect for gravel areas, between cracks in the sidewalk and anywhere you are NOT growing food but don't want weeds either.

    1. I go out once a week and spray the weeds while they are young. Older weeds may need 2 sessions, and really stubborn weeds will need the heat of the sun to help the spray. But personally this is my favorite weed killer, it won't harm pets or the soil.

    1. I hope it helps in your garden walkways and borders as it does in mine. My crushed granite walkway would be a super big weeding headache and chore if not for this spray. Thanks for stopping by, I appreciate it.
