In My Kitchen April 2025, Looking Back on March

Welcome to In My Kitchen! Once again we have the pleasure of joining Sherry for her monthly link-up to showcase our kitchens. Sharing what we might have cooked, accomplished and purchased. I will tell you right now, March was wild! We had big storms, food inventories shortages that needed restocking with our usual trek to Lufkin to meet the Azure Co-op truck. And on the hot days a garden screaming out to be conquered...

After going back and forth, I finally decided to get muffin tins...

While I had a real tug o war with myself over this simple decision, I finally caved and purchased a set of 2 - Six Cup Tins. Now I don't always bake muffins, and I probably should, but I do use them for mini meatloaves, or perfectly roasting a single head of garlic in each cup for a mess of roasted garlic.

And they do make great cupcakes which just might be the difference between my husband having a chocolate dessert to enjoy or his buying one from the market! Now to experiment with some chocolate recipes that we can freeze in serving portions.

And with all the outside work done in the garden, the kitchen took a back seat!

But honestly the outdoor work was just what I needed after our very cold and very long February. So we ate a lot of leftovers, and repeats of larger recipe favorites.

But I did come up with a few new recipes and ideas.
Favorite Honey Chicken Skillet and Mediterranean Beef, plus this quick and tasty dessert Busy Day Fruit Cobbler, that are now part of our repeat list of favorites. But the post I am most proud of is this one! Whole Wheat Sourdough Part 1, building a starter

And this 5 Minute No Sew Task Apron that really is quick and easy, plus you will get more use out of that "worn out" pair of jeans.

Additionally, I updated 18 older posts, for clarity of instructions and sentence structure. Often adding a photo or two. My goal is to have the archives completely updated this year...

March is also my birthday month...

I was treated to a fun family dinner where every course was from a different country, cooked by my lovely daughter. This was a decade number, (OMG 70!) so we celebrated fairly large. All the food was delicious and we got leftovers to take home as well! And trust me, when there is outdoor work to be done, leftovers taste mighty good! Plus I got a lot of really nice gifts, more than I need of course, but isn't that what birthdays are for...

The roses started blooming...and they will once again grace our dining table.

And the strawberries started ripening! The strawberries ripening is a big deal, we go no berries last year.

And what about that Whole Wheat Sourdough starter?

It has been sitting in the fridge since being completed, partly due to needing to wait for our Azure Co-op delivery and a lack of time for bread baking. But it worked out for the best because according to what I have read, reread and been told, the starter does not have to be used constantly to stay active.

I could go so far as to say, it was by design to prove a point. But since I took an oath of integrity decades ago when I started blogging, I won't say that...waiting for grain and time to bake is the truth!

But it will be a fun experiment to grind up some grain and begin using the starter. I have baked bread this month, our standard family favorite Whole Wheat and Honey Bread, a four loaf recipe. Turns out it is the only bread my grandson will eat, and he had run out of bread in the freezer! I have also learned that whole wheat sourdough is more sour than the usual white sourdough loaf. I have been reading about ways to make it less so, for those who prefer a softer sour if you will. Needless to say, I think we can all gather what April will bring, to my kitchen.

Thanks so much for stopping by, I appreciate it!

  1. Recently we also needed muffin tins and realized that I had gotten rid of ours at some point in the past. But we discovered that we owned a set of silicone muffin cups that worked perfectly! I bet they would also work for your trick with roasting garlic.
Strawberries ripening in March! What a thought! We barely have the earliest spring flowers.
    Have a good month… mae at maefood.blogspot.com

  2. What a busy month you had! Happy Big Birthday by the way - big birthdays merit a big feast so pleased you celebrated in style. Your bread sounds amazing. We cheat and buy our sourdough but different loaves from different bakeries really vary in their sourness. I love your roses and how exciting about the strawberries! May they be the first of many!

  3. Happy belated 70th! It sounds like a very busy month on the homestead. I have never thought of using my muffin tins for mini meatloaves but I am definitely going to give that a try.

  4. very many happy returns for your birthday! Looks like a good month in your kitchen. Here in queensland we get strawberries ripening mid winter so around june/july. I am not a bread baker so i admire those who do. Have fun and a great April.
