Pear and Munster Quesadillas.

Pear and Munster Quesadillas! A lovely recreated hors d' oeuvres served at a wedding reception from years ago! You are going to enjoy this simple and delicious treat! Serve as a fun starter or even a quick lunch!

A few years ago, our family friends Alex and Margarita got married!

They had a lovely ceremony that was charmingly beautiful and down home comfortable at the same time. There was music and dancing while the bride and groom took a moment of their own before coming into the reception area to join the guests. A lovely start to this new life together. They married after seven years together first as friends...and that exact moment they stepped into the reception, was the beginning of a new life together.

The Groomsmen were handsome in their kilts and the Bridesmaids were stunning in their beautiful gowns. Cultures and traditions combined perfectly! The kids (our daughter and Son in Law) were in the wedding party so my husband and I were free to blend in with the other couples on the dance floor. We nibbled tasty bits brought around on silver serving platters, waiting for the arrival of the wedding party. It was a lovely ceremony, reception and dinner with friends, and family.

But I never forgot about one of the nibbles!

Simple ingredients prepared perfectly and offered like it was the best thing in the house, and you know, it really was! Delicious food is often delicious because of the care in the making, as much as the ingredients. What was this delicious and yet easy to put together nibble? Pear and Munster Quesadillas. Looking back now, I am not certain why I waited so long to make them? Four simple ingredients, a hot pan and a bit of time is all they take.

We used whole wheat tortillas in our version of Pear and Munster Quesadillas. But feel free to use your favorite style of tortillas. You will want to use a firm, ripe pear. We used Anjou pears this time, our market had a nice selection of organic pears when we shopped for some of the ingredients. But any firm ripe pear will work. Since I was not in the kitchen when these were prepared, at the reception, I used two different cooking methods and knew immediately which one is best.

You do not want to grill long enough to cook the pear slices.

Why? Cooking the pear results in the release of pear juice, only cook long enough to melt the cheese and toast the underside of the tortilla. then quickly fold in half over the pear slices, press down lightly then cut into three wedges and serve! The flavor profile is mild, but that was my favorite part. I loved the creative use of tortillas in a unique starter to offer.

Recently when I made these, they were made at a shared family dinner. After tasting them, my daughter sprinkled hers with a bit of roasted garlic and thought they were delicious with the addition of the garlic. My husband wanted his with salsa on the side and thought they were delicious with the salsa. Apparently you can enjoy them as they come off the griddle or dress them up flavor wise if desired! Me? I am an "off the griddle" Pear and Munster Quesadilla eater!

Some additional thoughts on this recipe:

Do not cook using a 2 tortilla method. This longer cooking time will make 6 wedges, but the pear also cooks, and the juice will make the finished quesadilla to wet to enjoy.

A fruity salsa would be a good choice for those wishing for more zing!

Feel free to use any seasoning on the cheese before adding the pear slices.

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • Munster cheese, block style
  • tortillas
  • firm ripe pears
  • butter
You will also need the following:
  • cutting board
  • kitchen knife
  • large skillet or griddle
  • silicone spatula for folding
  • kitchen knife
  • cheese grater
Now we are ready to begin!

Wash and dry the pears set aside. Grate the Munster cheese, set aside.

Heat the skillet or griddle if using to medium hot. While the griddle is heating, cut a pear in half, then into quarters. Remove the core and slice thinly.

Place a bit of butter on the griddle or skillet and let melt. Add a tortilla, sprinkle evenly (but lightly) with cheese and place 3 or 4 pear slices on half of the tortilla as shown.

Let the tortillas grill until the cheese is melted and the underside of the tortilla is medium brown and crispy. Use the spatula to fold the tortilla in half as shown with the cheese half folded over the pear half.

Cut into 3 wedges and serve.
