Whole Wheat Cream Cheese Banana Bread

Is banana bread a favorite at your house? Is it your go-to recipe to use up ripe bananas? Then you will love this Whole Wheat Cream Cheese Banana Bread! Not just delicious, but a step up from everyday banana bread. Don't shy away from the whole wheat part, this bread is tender and delicious.

This tender loaf of banana bread is as adaptable, as the list of ingredients!

This is a very friendly recipe! And so easy to customize. As it turns out some folks are purists when it comes to their banana bread! Some love walnuts in it or on top, some don't. Some love chocolate chips in their banana bread, and again some do not! Our own family has these same struggles preferences!

But this Whole Wheat Cream Cheese Banana Bread makes it easy to please everyone. Because this recipe makes two loaves at the same time, making it easy to customize one or both loaves. Just to clarify, Whole Wheat Cream Cheese Banana Bread is just as delicious without nuts or chocolate chips.

And since it is so easy to make, those bananas that are a little too ripe for fresh eating don't stand a chance of being wasted. Actually, you just might wish you had a few more to bake with...

It is hard to wait out that 24 hour rule, I won't tell, if you don't!

In our house, we try and follow the "let it rest overnight" rule before cutting into a loaf of quick bread. As a young wife and mother, I thought that that rule was silly. But honestly, I have noticed that the rest period seems to set the moisture in the bread, keeping the loaf tender and moist until the last slice is eaten.

My husband is not the biggest fan of whole grain baking, but this bread? Even he loves it! And sometimes when this bread comes out of the oven, we simply don't can't wait...But it is best to allow this loaf to mellow overnight as the recipe indicates. Fortunately with two loaves coming out of the oven, you can cut one, and wrap one for the next day...

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • Whole Wheat Self-Rising Flour, our recipe found here.
  • cream cheese
  • sugar
  • brown sugar, you can make your own!
  • oil
  • eggs
  • bananas
  • walnuts, if desired
  • chocolate chips, if desired
You will also need the following:
  • medium-sized mixing bowl
  • measuring cups
  • liquid measuring cup
  • stirring spoon
  • 2 loaf pans
Now we are ready to begin!

Whole Wheat Cream Cheese Banana Bread
by the seat of my pants!
350-degree oven

1 c sugar
1/4 c brown sugar
1 8oz block of cream cheese, cut into small squares
1/4 c oil
3 eggs
3 medium (or 2 large) sweet ripe bananas, mashed with a fork
2 1/2 c Whole Wheat Self-Rising Flour, you may find our recipe here.

3/4 c chocolate chips, if desired
1/2 c coarsely chopped walnuts, if desired

In a medium-sized bowl, cream together the sugar, brown sugar, and cream cheese. Beat on medium speed until fluffy, with no chunks of cream cheese remaining.

Beat in oil and eggs, then bananas. slowly mix in the whole wheat self-rising flour.

If you choose to flavor your loaves of banana bread, here is a suggestion:

Spoon half of the batter into a prepared loaf pan, top with walnut pieces.

Stir the chocolate chips into the batter remaining in the mixing bowl, then spoon the chocolate chip batter into a prepared loaf pan.

Bake 35 - 40 minutes or until done in your oven. Let rest in the pans for 10 minutes before turning out to cool.

Cool completely (overnight if possible!) before slicing.

Storage options for Whole Wheat Cream Cheese Banana Bread. You may store this bread at room temperature for up to two days, for longer storage wrap tightly and refrigerate. I have not frozen this bread, but there is no reason it should not freeze satisfactorily. Let thaw in the refrigerator.

  4. We buy a very similar sounding cream cheese banana bread from a local bakery and I heat slices and top them with peanut butter (protein to add to the fruit for a TOTALLY nutritional treat, LOL). I didn't even think about making it myself though. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe!

  5. This looks amazing! I can’t have cream cheese or eggs right now due to my nursing baby’s food intolerances but I’ll have to save this for when I don’t nurse anymore! For now, I enjoy these three-ingredient cookies! https://elle-alice.blogspot.com/2020/05/three-ingredient-oatmeal-cookie.html
