Dinner out with family and a bonus recipe to develop!
Once there we were quickly given menus and the usual basket of chips and salsa.
Except this, was not the usual tomato salsa found in most restaurants. This was a delicious, crispy, chopped Cabbage Salsa. Honestly, I had never had a salsa that was not tomato-based, before. But once tasted, I am sure I ate more than my fair share! And why not? It was delicious and a fresh change of pace from the standard tomato salsa served in most restaurants. Don't get me wrong, I love tomato salsa, the problem is, it usually doesn't like me...like many others, that limit tomato consumption.
Now the quest was on, could I make this myself, at home?
A little investigating led to this tasty end result!
I will definitely be making this Cabbage Salsa again because there is always a good reason to enjoy crunchy tortilla chips with salsa. Such as Mondays or being hungry before dinner, or Thursdays, and of course the usual, Taco Tuesday! You might want to start chopping that cabbage now...
- cabbage
- tomato
- cilantro
- garlic salt
- white onion
- lime
- jalapeno pepper
- chef's knife
- paring knife
- cutting board
- measuring spoons
- serving tray
- storage jar
Inspired by dinner out with the family and a little help from Life's Ambrosia
1/4 wedge from a medium-size head of cabbage, chopped fine
1 tomato, cut in small dice
1/4 bunch cilantro, minced*
1/4 t garlic salt
1 slice white onion, minced*
juice of 1 lime
1 jalapeno pepper, seeds removed and minced*
Combine all of the prepared vegetables along with the lime juice in a medium sized bowl. Stirring every 30 - 45 minutes. This will allow the flavors to marry.
One to two hours is fine. If making ahead, refrigerate until serving time. But allow to come to room temperature before serving. And serve with lots of crispy tortilla chips.
* personal tastes vary, you may certainly use more of this ingredient if desired.
