Whole Grain Banana Date Bread, all fruit and no refined sugar.

If you are looking for a loaf of banana bread so healthy you can eat it for breakfast, you have come to the right place! This Whole Grain Banana Date Bread is not only whole grain, but also all fruit-sweetened...

All our favorites have been remade in whole wheat flour, and they are still favorites!

As our conversion to whole grain baking began I felt compelled to remake all of our favorites in whole wheat. Which is a pretty safe place to start. And I can say, so far they still remain our favorites. But this Whole Grain Banana Date Bread was not one of our favorites. Because, honestly, we did not have an all fruit-sweetened bread like this one, in our list of all-time favorites. But we do now!

Delicious enough for dessert, nutritious enough for breakfast!

It goes without saying I am pleased with how this bread turned out! Whole Grain Banana Date Bread is wonderful! It is flavorful, moist, and made with whole wheat flour and all fruit sweetened. I tend to believe a slice of bread is oftentimes easier (cleaner maybe?) to eat on the go, than a muffin. There is no cupcake liner to peel away and dispose of. Those who nibble on the way to work will agree. Whether it was good for me or not, I often ate my breakfast on the way to work during my commute. And with how delicious this bread is, I should have taken two slices, one for breakfast and one for later!

Perfect with a cup of coffee.

Fortunately, when the weekend comes a slice of Whole Grain Banana Date Bread would be perfect to take along on camping trips, or why not pack a thermos cup of coffee, and a slice of this bread for a light breakfast on the trail and take a lovely morning walk? This just might be the tastiest all fruit-sweetened banana bread you will ever eat! Do allow this loaf to mellow overnight as the recipe indicates. That extra step makes slicing any quick bread, easier.

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • bananas
  • whole dates
  • whole wheat flour

UPDATED: 12.22.2023

2 c whole wheat flour - we use pastry grind flour
1 t salt
1 t soda
1 t cinnamon - if desired

2 large or 3 smaller bananas
2 c whole pitted dates
1/3 c oil
2 eggs

1/3 c water
1 T vanilla

broken pieces of walnuts for the top of the loaf

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, salt, soda, and cinnamon if using. Whisk to combine well, set aside.

Remove pits from the dates. Place in the processing bowl along with the bananas, eggs, and oil. Secure the lid, process until smooth, mixture will be thick.

Pour the banana mixture over the whole wheat flour mixture, add the water and vanilla.

Fold ingredients together until combined well.

You should not have dry pockets of ingredients, or wet pockets, but do not overmix.

Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until the bread tests done in your oven.

It is hard to wait, but do wrap and store overnight (all quick bread improves with a 24-hour resting period), then slice, and serve.

  2. I love using whole wheat flour. I found that Wheat Montana brand is really ground fine.
