Simple Baked Cabbage

One vegetable you will always find at the produce counter is cabbage. Maybe that is one reason it has become a favorite around here! Today we are offering Simple Baked Cabbage, come and take a look...


Cabbage has come back around again as a vegetable to enjoy!

If you are a cabbage fan, (or possibly even if you are not!) you will love this silky baked cabbage dish. We did not eat a lot of cabbage in my childhood home. From time to time mom would make a bowl of coleslaw and there was the usual Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner once a year, but honestly that was about all that I remember. It took me awhile but cabbage has become one of my favorite vegetables to prepare and Simple Baked Cabbage is a favorite. 

We tend to eat quite a bit of cabbage, it is good, and good for us all. 

Cabbage must be on my mind because the previous recipe I shared was also a cabbage recipe. Or possibly it is because cabbage is always a good choice at the market. And as we wait for the first new spring crops to hit the produce section it is one vegetable you can count on to be available. Cooked or raw, cabbage is a good choice to add to your meal plans. 
 

This recipe couldn't be easier!

You will find that this recipe for Simple Baked Cabbage is not only delicious, but the preparation is also very easy. A few basic ingredients, a covered roasting pan, and an oven. That's it! If your favorite shallow baking dish does not have a lid, just wrap it tightly with aluminum foil and carry on! Just remember to season as desired...because this easy cabbage dish has a delicate flavor, feel free to use avocado oil if desired. 



Some additional thoughts on this recipe:

Feel free to season with any herb you might enjoy on cabbage, a favorite around here is a touch of garlic. But you also might enjoy Smoked Paprika.

Another favorite method is to sprinkle the cooked cabbage generously with Parmesan Cheese and place under the broiler for a few moments until golden brown.

Cut enough wedges of cabbage to fit into your baking pan, any remaining cabbage can be refrigerated for another use. Or if your oven allows, use a larger pan!

If EVVO is too strong of a flavor for your family, feel free to use another oil of choice. We often use avocado oil. 


Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • cabbage
  • olive oil or avocado oil
  • salt 
  • pepper
You will also need the following:
  • large kitchen knife
  • cutting board
  • shallow baking dish with lid
Now we are ready to begin!




Simple Baked Cabbage

375-degree oven

1 large cabbage - use what will fill your casserole dish and store the rest for another use.
olive oil or avocado oil
salt
fresh ground pepper

Cut the cabbage into wedges, layer in a large baking dish.



Season with salt and pepper (use a heavy hand, you won't be sorry), drizzle with olive oil. 

Cover and bake for 1 hour. For standard green cabbage, you will need to bake 1 1/2-2 hours for that soft and silky, creamy texture.



Serve as is or you may opt for the Parmesan Cheese topping, below!


Simple Baked Cabbage with Parmesan Cheese.

Although not traditional, a  generous sprinkling of Parmesan cheese is delicious. Place the baked cabbage under the broiler for a few minutes to sear to a golden brown.

Storage options for Simple Baked Cabbage. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to three days. I do not recommend freezing this dish.

  6. Judee from Gluten Free A-Z Blog: I love this idea for versatility. I usually put cabbage in a salad or soup. It's one of my favorite vegetables so I'm sure I would like it this way too.

    1. Cabbage is a wonderful vegetable to have in the kitchen, my favorite version of this recipe is with some garlic and Parmesan cheese on top, and a little roasting under the broiler...

  8. I have a couple of recipes where I am using 1/2 head of cabbage and most of the time the other half is in the fridge until it has to be thrown away. I know what I am doing with that other half from now on. Thanks for sharing!
