Bananas in Orange Caramel Sauce

Bananas in Orange Caramel Sauce is perfect to make and enjoy any time of the year! Fresh oranges have flooded the market place and green-tipped bananas are never a problem! This is one fruit dessert that will not leave you looking for something else, once you leave the table...

We really need to make this more often, it is that good!

Bananas in Orange Caramel Sauce, what a delicious way to end your meal while enjoying the virtues of eating fruit (or mostly fruit) for dessert. I have been making this on and off for over 25 years and it is always refreshing. Actually each time I make it, I usually thing, why don't I make this more often! As written, this is one of those recipes for just the two of you, but if there are more folks at your table it is really easy to double and even triple the recipe!

It is almost not a recipe at all! So easy to make...

This recipe is so easy to make, there is not a lot of need to explain it! Simply juice an orange, diagonal slice a couple of bananas, quickly cook up the caramel sauce and that is it, and Bananas in Orange Caramel Sauce can be served! My only hard fast tip, don't actually cook the banana slices. You fold them into the hot orange caramel sauce, count to about 20, to warm but not cook the bananas. Then serve! I hope you enjoy this sinfully delicious way to have fruit for dessert because we sure do!

Some additional thoughts on this recipe:

The different dairy options will give a slightly different dessert each time it is served.

Do remember to simply warm the banana slices to keep the fruit from getting too soft.

As written this recipe serves 2, simply double or triple to serve more folks.

Ingredients needed for this recipe:
  • bananas
  • fresh orange
  • butter
  • brown sugar
  • cinnamon
  • sour cream or dairy product of choice
You will also need the following:
  • cutting board
  • kitchen knife
  • sauté pan
  • citrus juicer
  • silicone spatula for stirring
  • serving dishes
Now you are ready to begin!

1/2 of a fresh orange
2 green-tipped bananas
1 T butter
2 T brown sugar
dash of cinnamon

sour cream
OR
vanilla yogurt
OR
vanilla ice cream
OR
mascarpone cheese
OR
whipped cream

Wash and dry the orange. Cut in half and juice the orange, pour the juice into a flat sauté pan along with the butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until the orange juice has reduced and the mixture forms a syrupy thickness.

You do want a green-tipped banana for this recipe.

Diagonal slices are easier to work with and look lovely on the plate.

Peel the bananas and slice thickly on the diagonal.

Fold bananas into the sauce, however, do not cook.

Fold the banana slices into the orange caramel sauce and heat gently - but do not cook- you want firm banana slices.

To serve:
A beautiful fruit dessert your family will enjoy!

Place a spoonful of sour cream, whipped cream, or the dairy selection of choice on the serving plate, sprinkle with cinnamon. Spoon banana slices and some of the sauce around the sour cream. Serve immediately.

Storage options for Bananas in Orange Caramel Sauce. I cannot imagine having leftovers, but should you, feel free to store them covered in the refrigerator for up to three days. Do expect some changes in color and texture. Do not freeze this recipe!
